It's been a wonderful first few months of teaching our new BA (Hons) Early Childhood Education and Care degree! 🎓 First-year students' #EarlyChildhood degree modules include: 👉 The Developing Professional Practitioner 👉 Keeping Children Safe: Safeguarding and Child Protection 👉 Learning, Development and Pedagogical Theory 👉 Introducing Self-Regulation One of the other modules they've been attending is Principles of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. Equality, equity, diversity and inclusion is a thread that runs through all our modules because understanding children’s different characteristics is crucial when supporting #children, families and communities. This module is a foundation module to support students' understanding of #individuality and meeting children’s individual needs. Who better to explore one of these modules further with than a current student! Roxanne, a first-year #InternationalStudent from the US, has shared her insight into studying this module, how she was assessed and what she enjoyed about this module! #WeAreNorland #EarlyYears #Degree #HigherEd #Equality #Diversity #Inclusion #EDI #ChildDevelopment

Despite the importance of training teachers in inclusive in-service education and its role in improving their knowledge, skills and attitudes, pre-service training is of greater importance as university education programs are still traditional and deal with disability through the lens of disability and not by adopting a human rights approach. I believe that we need a transformative approach in university education programs to train teachers to teach people with disabilities within a diverse, fair, participatory, and supportive educational environment, not isolating environments. #Inclusive_education #Jordan #education_reform

https://lnkd.in/dDgSPGNZ Inclusion can be defined as “a process that helps overcome barriers limiting the presence, participation and achievement of learners” (UNESCO, 2017: 13). Inclusive education is an essential means to eradicate extreme poverty, eliminate disparities later in life, and enable societies as a whole to thrive in shared prosperity and sustainable development (Wodon, 2016). Many barriers prevent access to education for vulnerable children, including children with disabilities, girls, orphans, and many others who may be at the intersection of several sources of vulnerability. Although international commitments have been made towards inclusive education with concrete improvements, not all gaps have been filled. For example, disability reduces the chances of attending primary and secondary schools by 30 percentage points (Mizunoya, Mitra, and Yamasaki, 2016), and the gap between disabled and non-disabled students ever enrolling in school appears to have also grown over time (Male and Wodon, 2018)
