Women led/women run organizations can still be plagued with gender inequities that affect productivity and stifle growth. Does this little fact surprise you? I have a few theories about why this is true, but here is one that is evidence informed by the brilliant Gloria Steinem: North America is just as much of a patriarchy as it was when she started THE women’s liberation movement. Organizations who lack leaders with the appropriate knowledge, skills, language, tools, and most importantly, confidence, openness and trust, are operating an old boys club culture that is masked in the appearance of equity. This culture protects silos of power, promotes calculated nepotism, and holds women back from experiencing true equity in the workplace. This culture leads to stagnancy, and frankly pushes highly productive women who are in the prime of their careers out of the workplace. There is good news, though! Gloria believes, as I do, that we can do better! How? It starts by looking inward, reflecting, and acknowledging where the gaps are. It’s not always easy to identify the gaps, especially when there is an appearance of equity. The time is now to LEVEL UP and create a plan that leads to Transforming Workplaces and Empowering People so that Health, Equity, and Culture Intersect to Optimize Success. Ever had that feeling where you walked away learning something new, when you weren't even expecting it? I did after finishing Season 2 of the Embracing Your Voice Podcast. Season 2 was focused on folks who work in my industry, my colleagues, in some cases good friends. And I still learned quite a bit about who they are and the challenges they've dealt with in doing the work they do. What is consistent is between Season 1 and Season 2 regardless of industry so many stories are the same about how women are treated, specifically women of color in career and life. Whether you are starting a business, running for office, moving up the ranks of an organization the challenges are identical because there is so much that is systemic even for the most determined of women. I'm looking forward to Season 3, given the time of year, I wanted to continue the theme of talking about issues important in this year's election. So we'll be talking about advocacy and activism work. I'll be in conversation with women of color leading advocacy efforts on some of the key domestic issues of our time for the people (reproductive rights, immigration, family leave etc), we'll discuss not only the importance of their work right now, but the challenges (and triumphs) they've dealt with as leaders in this space as women of color, while being unapologetically themselves. As we celebrate yet another International Woman's Day, events, adorations, accolades and some more, and having closely been involved in such activities and via my personal observations, I would like to boldly state something here: I believe that as AI and Robotics and automation evolve, and as machines take care of most Masculine tasks, the Future of Work as we move forward would need lots more of the traits that Women are gifted with. Empathy, Warmth, Love, Beauty, Intuition, and Resilience being some of them. In an earlier post, I have mentioned the caregivers of a hospital, who are almost all, Women. This morning, I tuned into the #ChangesPodcast hosted by the amazing #AnnieMacmanus. In this special #internationalwomensday episode, she interviewed Deborah Frances White, author of 'The Guilty Feminist.' Although I haven't read the book, the podcast discussed the concept of being an imperfect feminist, embracing curiosity, and striving to create a world where gender doesn't determine outcomes in various aspects of life. Hearing this resonated with me, especially as I'm not feeling deeply connected to #IWD this year. While I recognize the ongoing challenges, I increasingly sense that the binary framing of the day hinders our understanding of gender as a fluid scale that evolves through life and contexts. Imagining a world without gender markers on passports, I ponder the possibility of allowing people to shift fluidly between gender scales and focusing on the individual. If there is anything I like to celebrate then it is the things we tend to associate with women. Some call it the divine feminine. Before I mention these characteristics, I would like to invite you to consider whether you have observed them in people who don’t identify as women because I have for all of these. -         Empathy and caring for other -         Patience -         Vulnerable and nurturing -         Cooperative -         Actions oriented to experience joy rather than other outcomes -         Defines success through relationships -         Gentleness and sensitivity -         Creates and gives life Regardless of gender, let's celebrate these shared characteristics today. Recognize that we all have much to learn and give to one another, whether embodying these traits or others typically associated with those identifying as men. Let's be fluid in expressing these qualities when appropriate, fostering a future where gender is not confined to a binary framework.
