The "diversity-inclusion-equity" concept continues to be a hot topic of discussion during the first two days of the Social Mission Alliance (formerly Beyond Flexner Alliance) conference 2024. Together, as a group, we have shared our experiences (good and bad), frustrations, lessons learned as well as the incremental progress that is being made to materialize the concept. The discussions clearly prove that it's a work in progress; it will take continuous effort and we must not stop. I have come to realize that we cannot create a false narrative around this topic, hence the reason for each one of us to cultivate self-awareness. And this work in progress also requires both individual and collective efforts. Thank You Social Mission Alliance (formerly Beyond Flexner Alliance) for providing a safe and bold space for this diverse population of attendees (e.g., nurses, doctors, social workers, mental health and public health specialists, and so on) to discuss this real issue.

Having dedicated over 25 years to the nursing profession across diverse roles and capacities, I now find myself immersed in the domains of psychology and mental health. This journey highlights a profound truth: we are united by more than our differences. Our collective experiences encompass shared afflictions, traumas, celebrations, victories, and triumphs. Despite the potential for various backgrounds to obscure commonalities, I have encountered narratives within our rich tapestry of humanity that are strikingly similar. If one were to listen without visual cues, the distinctions between individual histories and present illnesses (HPI) would often blur, irrespective of one’s complexion—be it lighter, darker, or anything in between. The fundamental issues we face converge upon a few critical areas: the universal desire for access to nutritious, affordable food; the need for secure neighborhoods that foster the growth and development of our children; the imperative for accessible and pertinent academic and educational opportunities that reflect the evolving landscape shaped by technology and an invigorated interest in the creative arts; and, ultimately, the pursuit of viable pathways to mental well-being and resilience. In recognizing these shared aspirations, we can better understand the intricate connections that bind us as a community, transcending superficial differences. #TIMTUUTDU
