#ThisDayThatYear – on June 11, 2002, our first Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plant based on membrane technology was commissioned in Miryalguda. It became fully operational in 2003. In the extract below taken from our first-ever Sustainability Report released in 2004, read about how our first effluent treatment plant that was conceptualised, planned, constructed and implemented 22 years ago in Miryalguda for 100% recycling of effluents in our API units before the industry guidelines in the region evolved. The article notes how the plant became an oasis of greenery and a sanctuary for birds, bees and insects in an otherwise drought-stricken area. The technology was then extended to other plants in India. We have always viewed our work in the context of addressing societal needs, where we are uniquely positioned to make positive change and impact. Our sustainability journey began over two decades ago. We led the industry in introducing a 'sustainability by design' approach in our operations. Over the years, our efforts in various aspects of sustainability and ESG such as waste minimisation and management, emissions, investment in capabilities and other areas saw industry-leading initiatives such as zero liquid discharge and zero waste to landfills. We have a long way to go and as the article from 2004 notes, responsible corporate citizenship incorporates sensitivity towards the expectations of all stakeholders – economical, environmental and social – going beyond statutory mandates. At IIT Delhi's Unnat Bharat Abhiyan conclave, environmentalist Imteyaz Ali presented his Bhopal model for waste-to-resource transformation as a blueprint for economic development. This "waste-to-wealth" approach resonates with our own evolution, as the industry increasingly recognizes the immense value proposition of sustainable practices. As we align with the vision of creating a more sustainable future, the upcoming commitment involves continuous innovation and collaboration, ensuring a leading role in the ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact. Have you ever wondered how a simple idea can transform waste into a valuable resource? Meet Pavani, a visionary student from Vignana Bharathi Institute of Technology in Hyderabad, who turned curiosity into action. Inspired by her experiences in the college’s Eco Club, Pavani embarked on a mission to tackle India’s waste crisis. Witnessing the neglect towards waste segregation during a village outreach, she envisioned a solution: a user-friendly composter to convert organic waste into compost. Thus, in 2020, ‘Future Steps’ was born, co-founded by Pavani and her peers, Mahesh U and Siddhesh Sakore. Their home composting kit, priced affordably at Rs 3,500, swiftly gained traction across Telangana, Maharashtra, New Delhi, and Karnataka. The kit, complete with a special green mix powder, efficiently transforms kitchen waste into compost within just seven days, without the need for artificial heating. Pavani’s innovation not only addresses India’s mounting waste problem but also empowers individuals to actively participate in environmental sustainability. Despite facing scepticism, Pavani remains resolute in her commitment to creating a greener future, one compost kit at a time. The Better India recently highlighted how Kenterra's innovative waste management solutions are transforming apartment complexes across urban India. According to the Solid Waste Management Rule (2016), every apartment must compost waste at the source, yet 90% still fall short of this mandate. In bustling cities like #Bangalore, #Hyderabad, and #Mumbai, effective waste management is critical. Kenterra’s solution, featuring the natural composting inoculum #Composorb, offers a game-changing approach. Composorb efficiently converts all biodegradable waste into a nutrient-rich organic planting medium, significantly reducing landfill waste. Let’s champion sustainable living and make our urban environments cleaner and greener. 🌱 Read about what a difference Kenterra’s solution is making here: https://lnkd.in/gTdXeQmi #WasteManagement #SustainableLiving #UrbanSustainability #EnvironmentalImpact #CompostRevolution #GreenLiving

Thanks to IITM and Madam Indhumathi for the Progress Workshop Series on Managing and Monetising waste. Listening to Mr.Ramesh from NIRDPR gave goosebumps about amazing success stories of Rural India. Meeting Mr.Umakanth of ITC and realising about the ground reality of the challenges involved in the Garbage collection process was a huge feed to my repository. A few thoughts worth sharing: *When https://lnkd.in/gJmQ8Wii is able to make an innovation from Pet Bottles, there is every possibility of seeing trash as raw material. *Sustainable Engineers out there,if you are looking for any resource from which you wish to try a product -Slippers,Shoes,Bags and Belts are those which needs serious speculation. (RJ Garbage Bank is currently housing half a tonne of shoe waste which is looking for an upcycler or an Eco Engineer who can value add this item) *Converting one man's waste into a worthy functional product needs sheer conviction. Do let know if there are any brains on this Earth who are working on this.
