As doctors, we can feel that we must always maintain control and keep it all together in order to serve others. This expectation can feel deeply ingrained and often leaves little room for us to acknowledge our vulnerabilities and need for compassion. Yet, it is essential to remember that we, too, are humanโdeserving of the same kindness, support, and understanding we so generously extend to those we care for. The concept of common humanity invites us to shift our perspective to see beyond the titles and roles that define us in our clinical settings. It encourages us to recognise that we experience moments of doubt, fatigue, and emotional unease from time to time. This realisation is not a sign of weakness but a reminder of our shared human experience. In embracing our common humanity, we pave the way for a more compassionate and supportive medical community where doctors feel empowered to seek help, share their struggles, and care for their well-being without fear of judgment or stigma. It fosters an environment where the well-being of doctors is given as much importance as that of the patients we serve. #healthehealers #humansinhealthcare #wellbeingfordoctors #selfcompassion

What stands out to you here? What are the first thoughts that go through your mind when you read the list? How often have you dismissed someone because of their title or judged people, their life, their intelligence because of a title or perhaps because of not having a title? People make the title, letโs start getting to know the best label and that is their birth name. The title you have does not make you any more or less important. Letโs get back to what values, beliefs, and personal characteristics of the individuals. This comes to my mind after reading a comment in the chat of a zoom meeting where a statement was written โ Lori I just attended a workshop where the presenter said that people with special needs donโt let go of their medical labels because if they do, they wonโt get their needs metโ We need to understand and separate characteristics of a diagnosis from characteristics of the person. Instead of always saying my child has special needs can we say my child has human needs which need to be uniquely addressed? Yes, a label such as a condition aids in proper treatment etc., just donโt stop there. PLEASE remember there is a human being under the label, that also is asking to be seen, heard, and understood.

For 1st/2nd Gens, what actions and/or inactions around accessing medical care (or any care) that COULD be perceived as resistance, non-compliance or apathy may actually be rooted in lack of support, lack of access (e.g. cultural, language barriers), fear, intergenerational trauma, limited information around certain options, etc. It's so important to look BEYOND our skin (name of the conference) and BEYOND the surface, the immediate actions to help improve 1st and 2nd generation's access to care. When I get to speak in front of professionals about how Intergenerational Trauma and being in The Repay Cycleโข, can show up in different ways for 1st/2nd Gens it makes me excited. I am excited to see what we can do to create impact on large and small scales. It was such a great experience discussing ways to strengthen how we can take care of 1st/2nd gens through different lens, and to connect with such great folks with a desire to help others. Thank youย @minorityhealthconference for letting me share this amazing space and for such great discussion. Everyone has their own story. Some have wishes to take control of their health proactively. Others, like Tom Scocca have, as he says in his article in New York Magazine, a medical mystery. We don't want you to hear or read "'no cure' and 'symptoms vary' and 'donโt know exactly what causes this process to begin,'" as Tom did. He continues with "I was on my own with it." We don't want you to ever feel those feelings. If you are navigating unexplainable symptoms, a new diagnosis, or feel like you are getting tossed from one practitioner to another with no clear path, consider functional medicine which looks at the whole body and whose goal is to heal, not to bandage up symptoms. #functionalmedicine #charlottenc The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M) ย

To practice shame-sensitive medicine is to inherently practice within a trauma-informed capacity. Shame has no space in healing.ย It has no place in our profession.ย It has no place in medical culture.ย Let us break down the conspiracy of silence around shame and foster the antidotes.ย Foster compassion.ย Foster empathy.ย Than foster connections that are supportive rather than competitive or punitive.ย ย Shame-sensitive, anti-shame practice starts with us.ย -- If you want to learn more about shame-sensitive practice, this theme runs through my body of work.
