Not every product with the mark Fairtrade is ethical and fair.. take Mars chocolates for example, they are still involved in #childlabour #forcedchildlabour #slavery within their cacao supply chain, but some of their chocolates have this #fairtrade mark and they use it to wash their poor records!
Why has The Fairtrade Foundation allowed this to happened? Well, many times challenged and many times asked, but never an honest answer from them. How much does the Foundation get or has got with fees charged to companies like Mars, Nestle and others alike to carry the mark?
Has this helped to eradicate child labour? NO.
Has this made these companies to fulfil their promises to eradicate child labour, latest was by 2020? NO
Has this helped to increase properly the price to a level that is really sustainable and fair and not just the bare minimum Fairtrade price? NO
Therefore if you really care, do your proper research and look beyond the FT mark, find fair trade enterprises (World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO)) and not just brands that put a logo in some of their products, when they have no fair trade principles at all.
We need more savvy buyers, more ethical business and better direction on organisations like the Fairtrade Foundation, people who really understand the suffering of an unfair world, of extreme poverty, of exclusion, of segregation, of slavery, of child labour and human trafficking, of honesty, so they won't ever allow to use a mark like this to companies that abuse people and destroy our planet.
