Flag Day, celebrated annually on June 14, commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States 247 years ago! Here are some interesting facts about the American flag: •The American Revolution began in 1775, and the colonists fought under their flags until June 1775 when the Second Continental Congress created the Continental Colors, essentially the first “American” flag. • The flag's colors symbolize Red for valor and bravery, White for purity and innocence, and Blue for vigilance and justice. • While Betsy Ross (George Washington's seamstress) is often associated with making the first American flag, historical evidence suggests that Francis Hopkinson, a delegate from New Jersey who signed the Declaration of Independence, designed it. George Washington later designed a new symbol of freedom, leading to the Stars and Stripes we know today. • The American flag has had 27 versions since 1777, adding a star each time a new state joined the union. • “The Star-Spangled Banner,” America’s national anthem, was inspired by a patriotic poem written by Francis Scott Key during the War of 1812. The tune is based on a popular British drinking song. • The flag has 13 stripes and 50 stars, representing the 13 original colonies and the 50 states. • American flag expert Whitney Smith Jr. coined the term vexillology in the 1950s, derived from the Latin noun 'vexillum,' meaning flag. Vexillography is the art of designing flags, and hobbyists are called vexillophiles. • The flag is known by various names, such as Old Glory and the Stars and Stripes. • There are six US flags on the moon, planted by the Apollo astronauts. Remember to proudly fly the colors on #FlagDay!

The introduction of gunpowder in the 14th century indeed revolutionized military fortifications. Prior to this, medieval castles and city walls were primarily designed to withstand siege tactics like battering rams and scaling ladders. However, gunpowder-based weapons, such as cannons, could easily breach these traditional stone walls. As a result, engineers began to adapt their designs. They lowered walls and extended them into broad, sloping earthworks, known as glacis, which absorbed and deflected cannon shots more effectively than vertical stone walls. This design also made it harder for attackers to position their cannons close enough for effective fire. The star fort, or trace italienne, was a new style of fortification that emerged during the Renaissance, characterized by low, thick, sloping walls and bastions projecting outward at each corner. These bastions allowed defenders to cover all external walls with crossfire from cannons and small arms. One of the most significant early examples of gunpowder changing fortress design was the fall of Constantinople in 1453. The city’s massive walls, which had stood for over a millennium, were finally breached by the Ottoman Empire’s powerful cannons. In Western Europe, the Italian engineer Francesco di Giorgio Martini was among the first to propose circular or polygonal fortresses to better deflect cannon fire. In England, King Henry VIII constructed a chain of coastal artillery forts to defend against potential invasions. By the end of the 16th century, the medieval wall was no longer seen as a viable defense against a well-equipped army. Instead, these fortifications became platforms for displaying power or were repurposed for civilian use. www.oppidum.ch/en #oppidum #luxurybunker #oppidum #security #survival #doomsday #bunkerlife #safehaven #luxuryliving #underground #bunkers #preparedness #luxuryworld #fortres #bunkerdesign #survivalist #luxurylifestyle #securitysystem #billionairebunker #doomsdaybunker #oppidumbunker
