The Leading Edge team had a wonderful time at the California Green Building Conference last week! As always, we enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, build new connections, and of course learn from our incredible peers. Thank you to USGBC California for yet another successful event, and to all those who shared the nuggets of wisdom below: ▶ Sustainability Beyond the Envelope (Ransom Hamrick, PE, Jimmy Parker and our very own Sara Hickman, LEED AP, WELL AP, EcoDistricts AP) Always consider the "E", "S", AND "G" needs particular to your project's community. For Campus at Horton in San Diego, this means.... 1. Considering the needs of all stakeholders when making design decisions. 2. Taking advantage of abundant sunshine with solar PV and battery storage. 3. Being mindful of water consumption by installing the largest known blackwater system of its kind. 4. Taking an adaptive reuse approach to minimize embodied carbon and construction waste while preserving the historic character of a beloved community fixture. ▶ Industry Pain Points in Emerging Building Technologies- Unsurprisingly, new technologies tend to be costly. Do your research and provide alternative solutions to the "big name" new technologies on the market. ▶ CCUS at Scale (David Gottfried, Kevin Hydes) Aggregate is a powerful and often overlooked means of reducing the embodied carbon content of concrete. - Lime-based aggregate has the ability to act as a "carbon sink". - Unlike fly ash, is a viable option post-fossil fuel phaseout. - Blue Planet products demonstrate a comparable PSI to standard concrete following 28-day curing period. ▶ Advancing Deconstruction & Materials Reuse in the Built Environment (Denise Braun, Jennifer Wehling, Kathryn Soter) Be prepared for pushback from designers, who often prefer all-new materials for aesthetic reasons. Additionally, the cost of refurbishing salvaged materials can be higher than purchasing new. It is the role of the consultant to balance meeting their project's sustainability goals in a cost-effective manner while continuing to move the needle forward.

This month marks four years since I received my LEED Accreditation, and my journey with green buildings has been transformative. 🏦 LEED opened my eyes to the vast potential of sustainable design. Initially, my efforts focused on clean energy, but I quickly became fascinated by the holistic approach of green building design. Evaluating buildings from multiple perspectives revealed the intricate interplay of factors determining performance. Green buildings go beyond energy efficiency and encompass location, accessibility, and construction materials. A building's proximity to bike lanes and public transport can significantly reduce its environmental footprint. We adopt a "cradle to cradle" mindset for construction materials, ensuring they are repurposed or recycled, minimizing waste, and conserving resources. LEED standards provide a comprehensive framework for designing and evaluating green buildings, considering energy usage, carbon emissions, and sustainable materials. The journey towards sustainable building is a continuous learning process, and I'm excited to be part of a community committed to pushing the boundaries of what's possible. #GreenBuilding #Sustainability #LEED #CradleToCradle #CleanEnergy

I look back at the valuable lessons I learned from the Sustainability for Design, Construction, and Manufacturing course offered by LinkedIn. The course not only provided me with a deeper understanding of sustainable design aspects in construction, but also emphasized the importance of considering the environmental impact of building practices throughout the entire project lifecycle. From the initial concept phase to the final fitting stages, sustainability must be an integral part of the design process. The course taught me that sustainable design goes beyond just meeting regulatory requirements or checking boxes. It's about creating structures and spaces that not only minimize environmental harm but also promote occupant well-being and productivity. The value of constant education cannot be overstated. It is crucial to continually update my knowledge and skills to remain relevant in the industry and provide clients with the most effective and efficient solutions. As a sustainable design engineer, I recognize the responsibility to create structures and spaces that not only meet the needs of today's population but also protect the interests of future generations.
