🇬🇧🇩🇪WE CONNECT TO INNOVATE 🇬🇧🇩🇪 The first British-German high-tech accelerator program starts at our Future Industries Hub Stuttgart! 🤝 With the support of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and Germany Trade & Invest we initially connected the key partners of this noteworthy collaborative effort. 🚀 And the results speak for themselves: The UK Accelerator will host six companies for six months at our Digital Hub Stuttgart from September 2024. The companies will have access to start-up support packages, including introductions and visits to key global companies and VCs, and were selected by a panel of UK and German judges from a pool of nearly 50 applicants. 📣 The innovators from fields such as quantum physics, #AI, #robotics and #VR are: 🟦 Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) 🟦 Holdson 🟦 BOW 🟦 Gemba 🟦 OctaiPipe 🟦 digiLab 🚀 This collaboration is a remarkable international milestone in our efforts to promote innovation through joint work. 💎 This is not a diamond. This is a sensor. After winning our UnternehmerTUM #UltimateDemoDay, QuantumDiamonds is featured in "The Innovator" as 🚀startup of the week🚀. Diamonds can be used as highly effective sensors in sectors like #semiconductor industry (quality control), #healthcare (patients' condition, understand variety of neurological disorders, Lab-on-a-chip devices), #batteries (understand process of battery degradation), #biochemistry and many others. To me personally, the most remarkable application field was always as GPS alternative. The sensors can accurately detect one's current location by detecting the Earth's magnetic field. This enables us to locate without GPS signals, like in caves or under water. I always asked myself if this technology can make satellites for navigation obsolete (talking about technological sovereignty). Quantum Diamonds is also an interesting case how a #spinout from research / university can work. Dominik Bucher and Robin Derek Allert are fantastic researchers from Technische Universität München. They have expanded the team by ex-McKinsey & Company consultant Kevin Berghoff as CEO, Fleming Bruckmaier as CTO, Kristina Liu as COO and many others. Past week I joined the economic #NetherlandsFlandersMissionUSA. Take-aways: ·      The fast-growing semiconductor industry necessitates more work force development activities and collaboration. Let us not forget to share inspiring stories #storytelling ·      Sharing cleanrooms, labs and office infrastructure between universities and industry is a real trend, both in the US (e.g. the Applied Materials new EPIC Center and Arizona State University MacroTechnology Works) and in The Netherlands (e.g. The MESA+ Nanolab) and in Flanders (e.g. imec and the recent GAINS initiative of Ghent University). This can drastically improve the commercialization path of new chip technologies (addressing the “lab-to-fab gap”). ·      The impact of generative AI will be profound in each industry and photonic technologies are key to cope with its massive application scale and energy demands. Electrons and photons dance together 😊! Several woman made their mark in this mission, including but not limited to: o  Francoise Chombar, chairwoman and co-founder of MELEXIS, who encourages us all to unite in advancing #STEM education o  Kim De Nolf, leading lady of the Flemish start-up scene who inspired many entrepreneurs during this trip o  Somya Gupta, lead innovation & strategic partnership at QuTech who embraces curiosity and exemplifies the art of questioning. The EIC Pathfinder falls under the Horizon Europe program and provides assistance to research teams by funding projects that aim to establish the scientific foundation for groundbreaking technologies. This support extends to early-stage research in scientific, technological, and deep-tech fields, with a focus on exploring new and innovative directions in science and technology to disrupt industries and create new opportunities. The program also helps in developing and scaling up innovative technological solutions that can lead to breakthrough technologies and disruptive innovations in Europe. Grant funding is available for early-stage technology development, with grants of up to 3 to 4 million euros for activities at low Technology Readiness Levels (TRL 1-3) up to proof of concept. Additionally, Pathfinder projects may receive extra funding to test the innovation potential of their research outcomes. Beneficiaries of the program have access to tailored Business Acceleration Services (BAS), including global partnerships, coaching, mentoring, expertise, training, and connections to the innovation ecosystem and peers. Meeting the EU's ambitious goal to increase its value share in the global production of semiconductors to 20% of the global market is not just a matter of boosting manufacturing capacity. Crucially, it's also a matter of innovation – of leading the world in powering future computing and communications with advanced chips, quantum, and photonics. These developments will shape both the digital and physical worlds of tomorrow and are critical for supporting European sovereignty, trust, and values going forward. In March, 12 European deep tech scale-ups were admitted to EIC Scaling Club's “Next-Gen Computing” market group, chosen for their high potential, deep impact, and solid foundations, having already: ➡ 108 active investors, ➡ Raised a total of €341.47M, ➡ Raised, on average, €28.5M per company, ➡ Raised, on average, €4.9M per round. Their goal? To scale not just their companies, but Europe's next-gen computing capacity. Everyday is a learning day! This one slipped under my radar to be honest, so thought it was worth bringing to your attention.... The research and funding ecosystem in the UK is complex and well developed - a great asset to the country and a cornerstone in supporting innovation and startup development. Most people will be very familiar with the work of UKRI and Innovate UK, plus the Catapults and other similar bodies. As I was researching for a client project I came across Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA). Newly formed around January 2023, their scope is; ""....focus on projects with potential to produce transformative technological change, or a paradigm shift in an area of science. ARIA is an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology."" At the forefront of cutting edge scientific discovery, some of the key areas they will be focused on; 💡Technologically programmable plants 💡Transformative AI 💡Compute efficiencies 💡Climate models and monitoring 💡Climate and weather intervention technologies 💡Human nervous system interface 💡Intelligent robotics This early stage research funding and exploration is about next generation technologies and solutions for the future. But this has to be balanced with focus on how such technologies can be exploited - with an effective strategy to deliver impact at scale. Fascinating stuff and I look forward to following with interest as their projects develop in the coming months and years. The UK research and funding ecosystem is complex but has a lot to offer to support innovation.
