Are we there yet? It’s a hard thing in business trying to predict the future and even deciding how far you should try. Should we have 10 year plans, 1 year, next week, what will I have for lunch today!?? For the first few years of Nodero’s life it seemed like we could only look 3 months ahead so even though we’ve always been cashflow positive it puts you in a state of uncertainty. Meanwhile a business colleague has his key contracts locked in for the next decade (Sounds nice!) Over the last year the Nodero leadership team has jumped head first into implementing the EOS ‘business operating system’ (https://lnkd.in/gzHbD_mw) . This provides some great structure around putting systems into place, having more cadence and purpose to our meetings , prioritising strategic yearly and quarterly activities (rocks) rather than drowning in the day to day, and putting meaningful metrics in to measure the effectiveness of all of the above. This is still a work in process! – definitely the metrics side is something we are having to beef up on, but there’s no doubt it has pulled our leadership team together and is helping provide some longer term clarity and I can definitely recommend if you’re looking for a bit more order to your company planning. Of course it’s even harder, and more important in a recession. Like many companies we certainly felt the pinch over the last couple of quarters but right now, despite the ongoing mood in the media, it feels like the tide may be shifting in a positive direction . Certainly for Nodero we’ve got barely anyone on the bench, there’s a bunch of irons in the fire and we’re back to having conversations about hiring and growth. This isn’t at all to say it’s all set and sorted – A couple of years back I did a terrific knife making course with my son (https://www.heorot.co.nz/) and I can tell you that iron in the fire was just the start and there were many, many hours of hammering, cutting, grinding and polishing before walking away with a pretty slick looking knife (and there were lots of opportunities to screw things up!!) Recession can be a curious and slightly uncomfortable paradox for tech service companies - Offsetting an organisation’s push to tighten belts and sadly sometimes cut staff, is the ongoing need to get more done with less which inevitably means automation and getting outside help. Which is all to say a recession is a mix of cuts and opportunities and this makes planning hard! Ultimately we're just trying to focus on doing good work, gratitude for opportunities wherever they come from and looking after our team and clients If you’re still reading I hope you’ve enjoyed what is admittedly a bit of a ramble! EOS weekly Level 10 Meeting I finished a full-day EOS Quarterly Pulsing Session with one of my clients this week. During the session, my client commented, “We missed our L10 Meeting 5 weeks in a row due to vacations, out of town business and loss of focus. It felt like being a marathon runner who stopped training for 6 weeks and then tried to go for a 15-mile run. Funny thing would be not being able to complete the run and having to stop after 3 miles. It felt like everything broke down. We had the worst Quarter in the last 2 ½ years.” My client could not believe the impact of missing five weekly Level-10 meetings in a row.
