Today the UK Government has published the Space Industrial Plan, a joint civil-defence plan that sets out to modernise the relationship between government and the commercial space sector, establishing clear visions, missions, and actions to unlock growth and develop resilient space capabilities. The Plan sets out five specific capability goals to direct resources and efforts to these areas of strategic importance and expected industry focus: 📡 Space Domain Awareness (SDA) 🛰️ In-orbit servicing, assembly & manufacturing 📲 space data for earth applications 🧭 Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) 📞 satellite communication technology This plan will focus on where we want to achieve UK leadership in specific capabilities and indicate where government expects a focus of resources across the space industry, and how we intend to change the way we work with the space industry to achieve a shared vision. Spotlight on one of the programs Mbryonics is working on to create an open and interoperable internet in space. DARPA's Space BACN program will connect all the satellite constellations together changing our daily lives from connectivity, navigation, disaster response, climate change monitoring to security. Mbryonics were honoured to be down selected as the only contracted partner for technical area 1 along with are partners Intel and ASU in technical area 2 and constellation partners Kuiper, Telesat, and SpaceX in technical area 3. My first article aimed at a non-specialised audience!   Here I try to explain some of the challenges that satellite operators face when two active satellites, or an active satellite and a piece of space debris, get too close to each other – we call this ‘conjunction’ or ‘close approach’. I also introduce some of the industry-led initiatives, like the Space Data Association and the Earth∞Space Sustainability Initiative, that try to address some of these challenges.   Space debris are an environmental issue for an environment most people are not familiar with – outer space.
