  • 🗞️ Industry news: New UK-made space system to help protect military satellites 🗞️ 'The Borealis command, control and data processing system will help the UK military the UK Space Agency to better monitor and protect satellites, through new software which compiles and processes data from multiple sources, more quickly, to monitor space.  The £65 million deal with CGI UK, an IT systems integration specialist, will support around 100 skilled jobs in Leatherhead, Reading and Bristol, boosting the UK’s space capabilities and delivering on the Government’s Plan for Change.  The new technology will provide UK military with a better understanding of the Space Domain, improving military commanders decision-making process and supporting operations, both at home and overseas.' • 📚 Industry reading: Rocket debris poses risks to aircraft operations 📚 'Even the smallest of objects can create problems for an aircraft. An object falling from space roughly the weight of a paperclip (about 0.04 ounce or a gram) could cause damage to an airplane if it strikes its windshield or is sucked into an engine. A piece of debris over 0.3 ounce (9 g) could punch a hole in the body of a plane, and an item less than a pound could cause a catastrophic crash.' The SDA has long called for the mitigation of space debris, yet we can see the problem worsening. Beyond the impact on in-orbit operations we are now seeing implications on earth. This article explains the risk being posed to the aerospace industry and highlights once again the importance of space traffic management and sustainability. • Our latest Blog! The increasingly collaborative relationship between military and industry has led to a growing realisation that commercial partners need to be protected against threats so that satellites can operate securely and safely and be available for use by military in times of need. NATO plans to launch its new commercial space strategy which aims to define how commercial partners can be protected against threats, and at the same time enable NATO allied militaries to better leverage commercial capability and innovations. Read our latest blog: Role of Industry in Safeguarding the use of Space to find out more. https://lnkd.in/epumZGen DON'T MISS! @Joe Chan will be participating on the panel NATO In Space: The Shifting Landscape & The Role of Industry at 11am on March 11 at SATELLITE Conference & Exhibition. It's going to be an interesting discussion.
