It is great to see young people like Will taking a lead in asking questions and engaging with experts on such an important matter as how best to ensure we have a reliable, secure, affordable energy supply into the future. We always need to challenge and keep an open mind, looking for better ways - and the challenges of our current pathways are becoming more obvious, particularly when it comes to reliability/ security risks and to price. Gas is great for firming, it is increasingly expensive and in high demand globally, we have failed to invest in exploration and development for reasons including policy and I see today an announcement from AEMO about supply shortfall risks in the eastern states. Let’s have a proper discussion informed by experts with different perspectives not just ‘the Science’ and what government funded organisations or industry players tell us, which naturally tends to align with current dominant thinking. We also need to understand the total cost of both pathways, nuclear but also 100% renewables including storage for long periods of wind and solar scarcity. What would have to be true for nuclear energy to make sense as a way to provide affordable reliable secure energy in the future, particularly to our manufacturing sector where reliability is so critical?
