It’s that time of year! Check-in on your finances to make sure you aren’t leaving money on the table. Here are the top 3 things you should check before 2023 comes to an end, from our very own Chief Wealth Officer, Bill Martin, CFA. Maximize your retirement benefits: You’ve probably heard of a 401(k) or a 403(b), but have you heard of a 457(b)? Physicians that work for tax-exempt organizations like a nonprofit hospital or government entity are often eligible for these types of plans, which allow employee contributions up to $22,500 for 2023 (or 100% of gross annual compensation, if less). Harvest losses in taxable accounts: Tax loss harvesting is a strategy that can help lower your overall tax bill by selling investments that have lost value in your taxable accounts to offset taxable gains from other investments. Assess how you donate to charities: Try donating highly appreciated stock instead of cash, or use the “bunching” strategy to max out your benefits in one year.
