Allyship starts with a belief in equality. But that's just the beginning. It means leaning into acceptance of lived experiences. Actively fighting against oppression. Truly understanding your own privilege and using it to stand with and for others so that we all benefit from the steps toward equality. There's always been purposeful effort by Mediavine team members to make sure we can all show up exactly as who we are and be accepted wholly. This month, in Connect, Moving Ahead faculty member and DE&I expert, Holiday Phillips guides us through how to become an ally and educate ourselves about LGBTQIA+ issues. Here is what she recommends: 1. Fill in the blanks of your history, as in formal education, sometimes the lives and experiences of marginalised individuals are left out. 2. Open up conversations. Often, the fear of being intrusive stops us from learning about issues we don't know enough about. 3. Read books and watch films about LGBTQIA+ lives as they are an excellent window into people's lived experiences. 4. Consume media from LGBTQIA+ creators on other topics as this will allow you to see them as whole people with varied lives and develop empathy. 5. Go to a pride event and take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the community and celebration and while you are there, to share yourself.

This event aims to create a supportive and an inclusive environment where parents can share their experiences, challenges, and joys of raising LGBTQIA+ children and what the society can do to make this journey an easy one. Objectives: - To foster understanding and empathy within our community. - To provide a platform for parents to voice their stories and insights. - To discuss the importance of support systems for both LGBTQIA+ individuals and their families. - To address common misconceptions and educate attendees on LGBTQIA+ issues. - To create an inclusive community.

Diversity and taking a people centered approach is fundamental to providing equitable healthcare. It saddens me that since I started at my current role that LGBTQIA+ services for adults and young people have been drastically cut. I don't think a week goes by the charities who offer groups and support to people are closed, or people who I have got to know have had their hours drastically cut reduced or in this case the whole charity has closed with little to no notice. In a time when mental health of young people and adults is at an all time low things like this can happen beyond anyone's control. Throughout my entire career, I have learnt how appropriate endings are so important for the mental health and well being of not only the people being supported but for those who support them. Even when the endings are tough and cause pain, saying goodbye and good luck is something I am very passionate about. I have seen, from personal experience what the lack of a positive ending can do. I am really pleased we managed to facilitate this celebration for the young people and staff. I was privileged to see the connections in action but also saddened that this safe place the staff had created for these individuals having to end so abruptly. Luckily, there is a place for them to go albeit not the same and they will have to travel further. The powers of b NEED to realise how vulnerable charities and other organisations are right now. We don't run on fresh air. If you cut people's support networks, you are not saving money long term, you are creating future costs for other services, ones such as the NHS who are already in a crisis.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this quote from Laverne Cox: "We all have the right to a world that's free of hate and violence." This month is a celebration, but it’s also a reminder of the challenges the LGBTQIA+ community still faces. Those of us who aren’t part of this community have certain privileges that we often take for granted. Simple things, like holding hands with a partner in public or talking about our relationships at work, are freedoms that many LGBTQIA+ people don’t always feel safe enjoying. ⚠ Imagine having to hide who you are for fear of rejection or violence. ⚠ - That’s a reality for too many people. For those of us in positions of leadership or influence, it’s crucial to use our privilege to create environments of acceptance and support. This can mean advocating for inclusive policies, actively standing against hate, and simply making our workplaces and communities more welcoming. Creating a safe and inclusive environment isn't just about big gestures; it’s also about small, everyday actions: 1️⃣ It’s about listening, learning, and standing up for others. 2️⃣ It’s about making sure everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. As Pride Month wraps up, let's not let the spirit fade away. Let’s commit to being allies in our daily lives.
