The steel industry is responsible for approximately 7-9% of global carbon dioxide emissions, a revolutionary shift is underway. Traditional steelmaking, which produced 1.86 billion metric tons of steel in 2020 alone, relies heavily on coal-based blast furnaces, leading to massive CO2 emissions. However, the advent of "green steel" promises to drastically cut these emissions, heralding a new era of sustainable industrial practices. Pioneers like H2 Green Steel, supported by significant investments from firms such as Demeter, are at the forefront of this transformation, showcasing how green hydrogen technology can reshape the industry's future. https://lnkd.in/g3jTzCPz

🌍 Green Steel: Transforming the Future of Sustainable Manufacturing 🌍 As industries prioritize sustainability, Green Steel—steel produced with significantly reduced carbon emissions—is emerging as a critical solution in decarbonizing manufacturing. Traditional steel production accounts for around 7–9% of global CO₂ emissions, but green steel technology is paving the way for an eco-friendly alternative. What is Green Steel? Green steel is manufactured by replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen or bioenergy during production, thereby reducing or completely eliminating CO₂ emissions. By leveraging electric arc furnaces (EAFs) and direct reduced iron (DRI) technologies, green steel can drastically cut down carbon footprints without compromising on quality or strength. Technologies Driving Green Steel: 1. Hydrogen-based Reduction: Uses hydrogen instead of coal as a reducing agent, which reacts with oxygen in iron ore to produce water vapor instead of CO₂. 2. Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs): Melts recycled scrap steel using renewable electricity, a method that produces significantly less CO₂ compared to traditional blast furnaces. 3. Biomass as a Reducing Agent: Biomass fuels replace part of the fossil fuel requirements, reducing emissions and making the process more sustainable. Impact and Applications: - Construction: Green steel is increasingly used in infrastructure projects focused on sustainability, from green buildings to eco-friendly bridges. - Automotive: Car manufacturers are adopting green steel to reduce the carbon footprint of vehicle production, especially in electric vehicle (EV) bodies and parts. - Consumer Goods: Companies are exploring green steel for use in household appliances, helping to make daily-use products more sustainable. Challenges and Future Potential: While the transition to green steel requires high initial investment, rising carbon taxes and increasing pressure for sustainability make it a worthwhile endeavor. With ongoing advancements, the green steel market is set to transform industries and help achieve global climate goals, making a net-zero future more attainable. 💡 #GreenSteel #SustainableManufacturing #HydrogenEconomy #Decarbonization #ClimateAction #ElectricArcFurnace #MaterialsScience #FutureOfManufacturing #MetallurgicalEngineering #GreenBuilding #CarbonNeutral #SustainableInnovation

Near Zero Steel 2030 SUPPLY Challenge Update 🌎 💪🏼💚 The World Economic Forum's First Movers Coalition set the initial goals of the Supply Challenge to: 👉🏽 identify global companies on a pathway to produce near-zero emissions steel by 2030 👉🏽 understand the impediments to supplying near-zero emissions steel by 2030 👉🏽 connect steelmakers with steel purchasers for offtake agreements 👉🏽 connect steelmakers with enabling technology companies that could increase the speed, scale and decarbonisation efforts of steelmakers The Challenge was launched in September 2023 during New York Climate Week, and submissions were open until the end of January. The outcomes of the challenge were: 🤙🏽 17 submissions from 11 countries 🤙🏽 >22 million tonnes of annual steel production identified 🤙🏽 identified steel companies' technologies, such as hydrogen direct reduction, molten oxide electrolysis, and carbon capture. Several obstacles were identified that limit the speed and scale of steel decarbonisation, which differed between regions worldwide. 🤦🏽♀️ green hushing: this prevents some steel makers from being more public about their objectives for fear of being accused of greenwashing. 🤦🏽♀️ availability of technology: even though the technology to decarbonise steel is known, there is limited availability in some regions. 🤦🏽♀️ availability of demand: the lack of known demand for reduced emissions steel and the increase in price of this steel limits the ambition of some steelmakers and their investors. 🤦🏽♀️ availability of renewable energy: this is a huge issue in some countries around the world using electric arc furnaces and wanting to produce green hydrogen given the energy demands of both. 🤦🏽♀️ funding: it is very expensive to fund new steel plants using new methods that involve risk. 🤦🏽♀️ some of the world's biggest steelmakers did not submit as they stated they had already secured demand and enabling tech. They will be able to take part in the next steps. The next steps of the challenge are to: 👣 get potential and high-potential near-zero emissions steelmakers on the First Suppliers Hub so that they can be visible to companies looking to invest in or acquire steel from them 👣 connect the supply and demand companies to generate off-take agreements between them. 👣 connect steelmakers with the enabling tech companies so they can work with them to increase their impact A team of subject matter experts evaluated all 17 submissions and identified five companies and six projects that have the potential to produce near-zero emissions steel by 2030. These companies are to be celebrated!
