We, eOceans®, have been working on this for over a decade. The focus is on aquatic ecosystems, but the applications are broad.
We started with existing standards (eg., Darwin Core, WoRMs ) and essential variables. We did a meta analysis of thousands of contemporary research projects on biological, social, cultural, anthropogenic, and environmental research to develop core variables. We also researched current metrics — species richness, evenness, biomass, health, behaviour—many of which we found apply to biodiversity, threats, and social values.
Additionally, we developed more complex interdisciplinary and multipdisiplinary algorithms that succinctly describe the state of different interventions across dimensions — such as protected areas (MPAs), Blue Economy, Fisheries.
Finally, we built the ‘Ocean Ledger’ so that many organizations can work towards common goals — such as restoring species and ecosystems.
It may sound complex, but we’ve efficiently and elegantly deployed all of this in one seamless platform that works at all spatial scales for anyone from ecotourism operators to countries and the world.
