Coaching and development is a vital part of any industry. For example, I spent last weekend mentoring a new starter in my local McEatery, teaching them the McRopes so that one day they can be an extremely impactful member of the McTeam. It's why it's so vital to ensure proper coaching is provided alongside a defined career path, because without it there's little chance of progression, and any progression in your career feels more like luck than design. Luckily I'm working with a couple of drylining contractors in the Midlands who are looking for trainee/assistant Quantity Surveyors to join their team. The view is that in the long run these guys are going to run the commercial departments, so long as they have the minerals - it doesn't get much more defined than that does it? Sound like it could be worth a chat? Drop me a line on 07863304210 or nathan@construction-resources.co.uk We need to make trainee roles great again. This month we have put our meet the team spotlight on quantity surveyor, Matt Worthy. Hear from Matt on his route to being a QS, and his wants for a more robust construction careers process when students are considering careers. 1. Why did you choose quantity surveying? I was interested in an apprenticeship after my A levels as university didn’t appeal to me. I looked at the government website and found lots of QS apprenticeship opportunities. I got speaking to a few people about the job and decided that that was the avenue that I wanted to explore. 2. Best thing about being a QS? I like the fact that not every day has to be office based, you can go out to site or even work from site. It means there is always change which keeps the job exciting. 3. Hardest thing about being a QS? The challenges in managing relationships between several parties! 4. Favourite project worked on? A scheme we have had in the team called Granite Way - I really enjoy going to site and seeing the project develop from start to finish. 5. Proudest career moment? Being given the opportunity to work at a higher level than I expected to be at this stage. Although I've been a QS for just over a year, I have managed to support on projects at a similar level as far more experienced members of the team. 6. Favourite building? Hungarian Parliament building. 7. What advice would you give someone currently looking at career choices? Don’t rush your choice, explore all avenues. The first job that comes up won't necessarily be the best one for you. Do you research and see if it fits with your strengths and passions. 8. What would you change about the construction industry? The lack and general portrayal of the construction industry in schools. We were never necessarily encouraged into the sector, and even if we were, it was just about trades. I wasn’t even aware of the commercial sides of construction and I'd like to see much more exposure of this to students who are looking at their options. 9. If you were not a QS, what would you be? A town planner. #meettheteam #qs #quantitysurveyor

Reflecting on my journey in Quantity Surveying over the past 12 years, it's disheartening to witness a decline in professional standards, as highlighted in a recent vacancy post. A decade ago, pursuing a Quantity Surveying bachelor’s degree was at its peak, especially in the Middle East, where there was a high demand for skilled Sri Lankan Quantity Surveyors. Our education system was robust, with rigorous requirements, including a 4-year full time program, with 8-month internship, module examinations, and a challenging 1-year dissertation. Now, seeing a post stating that "applications from Sri Lanka are not accepted" is disconcerting. Some institutes offer a mere 6-month QS course, and individuals with certificates from such programs fake up to 10 years of experience on their CVs. This fraudulent behavior undermines our professionalism, a result of actions by those who did not undergo proper training. As a Sri Lankan citizen, a Chartered Quantity Surveyor, and concerned about our future generations, I'd like to draw attention to vital considerations for recruiters: 1. Ensure degree providers are registered with IQSSL (Institute of Quantity Surveyors Sri Lanka). 2. Recognize membership in IQSSL, whether associate or graduate, as a mark of a qualified degree holder. 3. Verify certificates with foreign ministry attestation for legitimacy. 4. RICS-APC candidates must provide their registration number; false claims should be addressed. 5. Confirm the registration of construction or consultant companies mentioned in their CV by applicants. I hope that candidates who adhere to the principles outlined above will emerge as recognized and suitable professionals in the field. Their commitment to these standards reflects not only their qualifications but also their dedication to maintaining the integrity and excellence of the Quantity Surveying profession. Let's rebuild our professional community with integrity, maintain global standards, and create more opportunities for our future generations. Thank you for your time. Please share if you find this information valuable. #quantitysurveying #professionalstandards #SriLankanProfessionals

Certainly! The shortage of MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) Quantity Surveyors is a pressing concern in the construction industry. Unfortunately, there is currently a shortage of Quantity Surveyors overall. This scarcity is amplified when we specifically consider Quantity Surveyors with MEP experience. As a result, either inexperienced individuals are forced to take on unfamiliar roles, or experienced professionals have to juggle their time across multiple projects. One solution is to hire more apprentices. Quantity surveying apprenticeships are accessible and can attract young professionals to the industry. The Department for Education’s statistics show a significant rise in construction and building apprenticeships, including those for quantity surveyors. However, while apprenticeships help address short-term shortages, a long-term solution is still needed. Despite challenges, construction firms are recruiting. The growth in construction jobs outpaces other industries. The ageing working population contributes to the shortage. Ensuring a pipeline of skilled surveyors through education and development is crucial. In summary, the scarcity of MEP quantity surveyors poses challenges for the industry. Addressing this crisis requires a multi-pronged approach, including apprenticeships, recruitment efforts, and sustained investment in professional development. #mep #quantitysurveyor #skillshortage #costmanagement #quantitysurveying #mechanical #electrical #plumbing #akhilk #quantitysurveyingstudio
