New paper: Rapid on-ground survey of 21 rare & threatened plant species in northern NSW after 2019 #BlackSummer fires reveals new information on ecology, population size & distributions. Our work: ✅ contributes ecological data for a number of species that had no previous data available ✅ documents new ecological interactions and distribution patterns, and ✅ highlights the value in funding post-disturbance rapid on-ground surveys to inform long-term conservation outcomes for rare and threatened taxa This project was funded by the Australian Government’s Wildlife and Habitat #BushfireRecovery Program back in 2020. Did you know the sagebrush biome is one of most intact and least modified ecosystems in the world? And it supports hundreds of species and helps power rural economies. Yet, we’re losing more than a million acres of the most intact sagebrush areas annually despite our current conservation efforts due to invasive annual grasses, expanding conifers, and large wildfires. ARS-led research is among the 20 peer-reviewed articles from 24 organizations featured in a special issue of the journal Rangeland Ecology & Management. The special issue includes work from experts representing 24 organizations, focusing on the science behind conserving the sagebrush biome. This work builds upon the Sagebrush Conservation Design (utilizing the ARS-led Rangeland Analysis Platform), and explores how, where, and why partners are working together for this purpose. In 1992, Governments throughout the European Union adopted legislation designed to protect Europe’s natural resources. The legislation is called the Habitats Directive and it protects the most seriously threatened habitats and species across Europe. It complements the Birds Directive adopted in 1979. Sometimes in ecosystem restoration heavy machines are needed to undo the damage done by heavy machinery in the past. In this case, we're partnering with BROZ | Conservation Association to deploy an excavator that will turn an unproductive agricultural field into a 33 ha / 81 acres wet sedge meadow. These lowland wetlands are important breeding habitats for migratory birds as well as amphibians, insects and other kinds of wonderful creatures including some endangered microscopic life! Unfortunately, as a result of both past and recent policies, the diverse ecosystems of wetlands have almost disappeared from many parts of Europe to give way for agriculture, but often with little return. Unproductive agricultural lands, with high levels of underground water or terrain depressions that retain water after rains, present a great opportunity to tip the scales in favour of nature once again. In this project, we are using a brook with a dead end to provide a source of water for an area that was once a meander of the mighty Danube river. The brook itself is an important biocorridor for wildlife, including the endemic Pannonian root vole (Microtus oeconomus mehelyi). The new wetland adjacent to the brook will provide additional habitat for this and other wetland species. We are thrilled that after a long bureaucratic process that began over a year ago, the earthworks are finally on the way! The National Park Foundation is supporting research to better understand the vulnerable Bethany Beach firefly. This research sparked a collaboration between the National Park Service, Delaware State University, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and The Xerces Society. The Bethany Beach firefly is under review to be listed as an endangered species. This research will inform future conservation strategies to protect these magical bugs. The great-billed seed finch (Sporophila maximiliani), thought to be the most trafficked endangered bird species in Brazil, has long been coveted in the caged-bird trade, which has caused the local extinction of the species over most of its former range in the Cerrado savanna. One conservation project is working to conserve the species holistically through research and environmental education, while collaborating with bird keepers and breeders to bring the species back to the wild.
