RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM: DESIGN JUSTICE - 15 JANUARY “What is the relationship between design, power, and social justice?” On 2020, Sasha Costanza-Chock published “Design Justice: Community-Led Practices to Build the Worlds We Need”. This book highlights the importance of rethinking design and engineering in a way that explicitly challenges structural injustices, based on the design practices of different oppressed communities and social movements around the world. At TU Delft, an interdisciplinary reading group studied the Design Justice framework and discussed the main tools and experiences that Costanza-Chock introduced. Now, connecting to the Delft Design for Values Institute annual theme of Justice, we want to take the chance to present our reflections and explore what this book can offer to designers in the quest for more just design processes and results. Aarón Moreno Inglés (PhD candidate at TPM) will lead this colloquium, in which we will delve into the Design Justice framework, its potentialities, pitfalls, its openings for further research, and the ways in which we could implement it in our current projects. Let's take this discussion outside. This resource from CAST is a valuable tool for advancing pre-K education to where it, and all other education, works best - outside.
I wrote another newspaper article - this time highlighting our new research paper on Scaling Up Outdoor Preschools. Read the article in the annual Education special section of the DJC, or download the whole paper from the CAST architecture website (link in 1st comment below). https://lnkd.in/gXhZSt9r

Follow me for ways to create a seamless, successful, and transformative college experience for all students from start to finish.
🛑 Stop Failing! Start Succeeding! 🎯 Have you ever stopped to ponder why, despite our best intentions and hard work, our educational programs don't always yield the results we expect? My book delves into this phenomenon, providing evidence that many failures can be anticipated from the outset based on the structures we put in place. Through my experience with numerous educators aiming to "redesign," "revamp," or "reimagine" their first-year courses or programs, I've witnessed the cycle of effort and investment that often leads back to the starting point after disappointing outcomes. It's easy to blame students, adding to the negative narratives that pervade our institutions. Yet, the root cause is often not the students but the poor choice architecture that underpins our design. This misstep not only hampers educators and students but also deprives institutions of the success they strive for. In my work, integrating choice architecture from the onset has led to courses and programs not only meeting but exceeding their goals. The secret lies in the design! I invite you to share how you're applying choice architecture in your educational endeavors. Your insights could be invaluable to this ongoing conversation. #studentsuccess #transitiontraps

Academic vs. Practitioner Tutoring: Who Asks the Better Questions? In design education, students often receive guidance from both academic professors and professional practitioners. A new study by Ada Hurst (1); Shirley Lin(1); Claire Treacy (1); Oscar Nespoli (1); and John Gero (2) from 1: University of Waterloo; and 2: University of North Carolina, Charlotte explore how these two types of tutors differ in their teaching styles (via ICED23 Proceedings: DS 122). https://lnkd.in/gBbXc-uh Join the "Design is a Team Sport" movement at ICED25 Dallas. How can we create a more effective learning environment for design students? What are the benefits of having both academic and practitioner perspectives in design education? On university campuses, we know every square foot of teaching space is precious. And that space planners and timetablers are under more pressure than ever to boost their institution’s space utilisation scores. It’s no easy task though when you’re dealing with regular curriculum changes. Timetabling quirks. Constraints on teaching hours. Not to mention getting senior management to understand what a ‘good’ utilisation score looks like in the first place! During one of our recent webinars, we chatted to some of space planning and timetabling’s sharpest minds and asked for their thoughts on all of the above. And rounded up their advice into one handy guide: https://buff.ly/3NrnNro Big thanks to Kirsteen Williams, Head of Space and Timetabling at Anglia Ruskin University; Kay Green, Space & Strategy Manager at the University of Sheffield and Dave Beavis, Strategic Space Manager at the University of Exeter for chipping in. We hope if you’re a university space manager or timetabler heading into the 2024 planning season that you find it useful! Let us know what you think in the comments too, we’d love to know 👇 #Escentral #SpaceManagement #Timetabling #SpaceUtilisation #SpacePlanning #University #Webinar #Blog
