I have a theory. About 4 years ago, I was doing research on pilot episodes of some of the best sitcoms in history based on ratings, syndication, and overall viewership. My research included M*A*S*H, Cheers, Modern Family, The Good Place and a handful of others. I believe I read seven different scripts in total. It’s often said that a page of script translates to about a minute of screen time. Sitcoms tend to run faster than dramas, and, of course, this rule is not always accurate due to varying amounts of scene direction. With that said, let’s run with it for the sake of discussion. I found that the half dozen or so comedy pilots I read averaged two jokes per page, or two jokes per minute. In most cases, these were multicamera sitcoms, so the laugh track was going off twice a minute, roughly. These jokes weren’t always in dialogue. Sometimes the jokes were brought on by camera movement, scene direction and blocking, or some other implication. I find that sitcoms today don’t have this amount of jokes. Or at least I’m not laughing twice a minute. The sitcoms that are produced today, in my experience, focus more on story and character development than humor. However, the humor is more subdued and doesn’t always stand out with everything happening, even when it’s explicitly attempted. Further, single camera sitcoms are more common today. Since there is no laugh track in single cameras and the format is more cinematic as a whole, they tend to take on more of a dramatic position in the television landscape. When we start to look at stories through an inherently more dramatic lens (literally), we start to look at the situations more personally. It’s all a matter of self-reflection based on the situations we witness on screen. We derive our own comedy from it. Given the amount of successful single camera sitcoms out today, it seems this shift in format is for the better as a whole for our culture. We are able to pull our own value out of them without being prompted to laugh with a recording of live audience members. Jokes are still written, but I think we are able to rely on the personality of characters to create humor out of irony without physical or verbal comedy. Some jokes are baked into the shows themselves and this capability is unlocked by getting rid of the laugh track and allowing viewers to experience the same story from their own unique perspectives more directly. #Sitcoms #TelevisionComedy #Comedy #Screeenwriting #SitcomDevelopment #MultiCamera #SingleCamera

I found this article interesting. You can’t argue with Ms. Coleman’s perspective that she would not have gotten where she is if she had to do self-tapes. I love receiving adjustments from casting directors and using them (and the director) to help build my performance. I don’t think asking actors to go on tape is disrespectful—particularly for television and film—as the producing of TV, films and commercials happens quickly and is fluid. In fact, I have taught actors over the years the great benefits for sending in self-tapes over auditioning in person. But I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—theaters who ask actors to go on tape for roles and who require multiple self-tapes (one theater comes to mind that basically asks actors to put entire roles on tape) without acknowledging even a receipt of their tapes—that just shouldn’t happen. There’s no reason that a simple form email can’t be sent out to actors—something that says, “Thank you so much for your submission. We appreciate you taking the time to put yourself on tape for us. We will reach out to you or your agent if we decide to move forward with a callback.” Without this kind of acknowledgment, yeah. It feels like a lot of work to do for someone who may or may not watch and may or may not care. That said, I continue to teach actors to embrace the self-tape—and to use it as an opportunity to flex their actor muscles. We don’t go to the gym to be acknowledged and have people watch. Every time you get asked to do a self-tape is an opportunity for you to practice your craft. Also: I’m pretty sure that Ms. Coleman and Mr. Scott are “Offer Only”. PS…still hate self-tapes? Hollywood Film 'Fast Charlie' Review: Entertaining Cast Saves Predictable Plot Language: English Genre: Action, Crime, Dark Comedy Director: Phillip Noyce Starring: Pierce Brosnan, James Caan, Morena Baccarin, Gbenga Akinnagbe Available In: Theatres Runtime: 90 minutes Rating: 3 star Fast Charlie is an action movie with a fun twist of humor. Pierce Brosnan plays Charlie, a hired killer who works for an old gangster boss (James Caan). When a rival gang attacks, Charlie seeks revenge. He teams up with a smart and brave woman named Marcie (Morena Baccarin) and faces many dangerous situations together. The Good Stuff Great Acting: Pierce Brosnan is charming and tough as Charlie. He works well with Morena Baccarin, who is funny and strong. James Caan delivers a memorable performance too. Action & Comedy Mix: The movie has exciting fight scenes and funny moments throughout. What Could Be Better Simple Story: The plot might feel familiar, like other action movies you've seen. Slower Pace: Some parts of the movie move a little slower. Direction and Style Noyce's direction keeps the film simple and engaging. The story mixes crime, romance, and humour. The action scenes are balanced with moments of introspection and comedy, though the plot sometimes feels predictable. Final Thoughts Fast Charlie is an entertaining movie, especially if you like action and some laughs. The actors are all great, and the movie is a nice tribute to James Caan's career. Even though the story might not be surprising, it's still enjoyable to watch. #Hitflik #fastcharlie #hollywood #moviereview #3star #morenabaccarin #piercebrosnan
