The UK has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates globally, with many mothers stopping by week six due to a lack of support. According to Claire Tchaikowski, CEO of the Bristol-based social enterprise Human Milk, more needs to be done to help new mothers succeed in breastfeeding. Despite 80% of UK mothers starting with the intention to breastfeed exclusively, less than half continue beyond six weeks. More resources and targeted support is essential, particularly during the postnatal period when new mothers need it most. #BreastfeedingSupport #MaternalHealth #Healthcare Read more here: https://lnkd.in/g6icbDGx

#International #Breastfeeding #Week #2024: #Day2 - “#Closing the #Gap: #Breastfeeding #Support for #All” On Day2 of International Breastfeeding Week, our focus shifts to the critical role of communities in supporting breastfeeding. The theme, “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All,” emphasizes how #communities can create an inclusive environment that celebrates and supports breastfeeding mothers throughout their journeys. #Communities play a vital role in reinforcing breastfeeding practices and ensuring every mother feels supported. Research highlights that supportive community environments significantly improve breastfeeding rates and duration. For instance, a study by Gupta et al. (2022) found that community-based interventions and support networks can lead to a 20% increase in breastfeeding rates. Furthermore, a positive community attitude can reduce stigma and encourage public breastfeeding, contributing to a more supportive atmosphere (Miller & Johnson, 2021). To enhance community support for breastfeeding, consider these strategies: - #Promote #Public #Breastfeeding: Advocate for breastfeeding-friendly public spaces and normalize breastfeeding in community events to reduce stigma and encourage acceptance. - #Educate and #Train: Implement community education programs to raise awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding and address common misconceptions. - #Support #Policies: Advocate for policies that support breastfeeding mothers, such as public breastfeeding areas and workplace accommodations. - #Eliminate #Prelacteal #Feeding: Educate communities about the risks of Prelacteal feeding and promote exclusive breastfeeding from birth (Jones et al., 2023). By working together, we can build supportive environments that celebrate breastfeeding and ensure that every mother receives the encouragement and resources she needs. References: - Gupta, S., et al. The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is an international network of individuals and organizations committed to advocating for, promoting, and endorsing breastfeeding on a global scale. Every year, WABA plans and manages the World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) from August 1 to 7. Since 2016, they have synchronized their WBW campaign with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), known as the WBW-SDGs Campaign. Additionally, they run another initiative called the Warm Chain of Breastfeeding Support. This initiative aims to create a continuum of care that supports mothers and babies from pregnancy through the early years, ensuring that they receive optimal breastfeeding support from all sectors of society. Through these coordinated efforts, WABA aims to highlight the critical role of breastfeeding in improving infant and maternal health, reducing inequalities, and promoting sustainable development. By fostering a supportive environment, WABA encourages communities to empower mothers to breastfeed, thereby contributing to the health and well-being of future generations. Each year, World Breastfeeding Week adopts a specific theme to address pressing issues and inspire action. These themes range from promoting breastfeeding-friendly workplaces to emphasizing the importance of breastfeeding in emergency situations. Through these focused campaigns, WABA mobilizes global action and raises awareness about the multifaceted benefits of breastfeeding, reinforcing its indispensable role in achieving a healthier, more equitable world. #WorldBreastfeedingWeek #TogetherForMoms #WBW2024 #WABA #ClosingTheGap #BreastfeedingSupportForAll#worldbreastfeedingweek2024 #WarmChain #breastfeeding #SDGs #buildingbackbetter

National Breastfeeding Month is celebrated every August, highlighting the importance of breastfeeding and prioritizing reducing the stigma around breastfeeding. The 2024 National Breastfeeding Month theme is “Nourish, Sustain, Thrive”. This theme shines a light on how individuals, funders, and policymakers can contribute to a strong and sustainable lactation field (National Breastfeeding Month, n.d.). Stigma around breastfeeding may cause mothers to feel embarrassed, leading them to avoid breastfeeding due to potential harassment or discrimination from breastfeeding publicly (Merin, 2021). Nursing mothers may even have to face derogatory comments from their colleagues and employers when they pump breast milk in the workplace (Merin, 2021). During National Breastfeeding Month, it is especially important to protect those who breastfeed and promote the positive effects it can have. In fact, breastfeeding contributes positively to the health of both the baby and the mother, and is said to reduce the risk of ovarian and breast cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure (Breastfeeding Benefits Both Baby and Mom, 2023). #Parenting #ChildHealth #BreastfeedingAwareness

🌟 Celebrating Breastfeeding Week 2024: Closing the Gap Breastfeeding Support for All 🌟 We believe that accurate information is crucial to closing this gap and ensuring women everywhere feel able to breastfeed anytime and anywhere. However, marketing of breast-milk substitutes (BMS) often skews perceptions, undermining informed choices and reducing breastfeeding rates. Since 2013, ATNI has been at the forefront of advocating for better infant and young child nutrition. Our latest BMS and Complementary Foods Indexes, published in March, are critical tools for holding companies accountable to international standards on responsible marketing. Join us this Breastfeeding Week as we explore how ATNI is working to promote breastfeeding and caregivers informed choices globally. Let’s unite to close the gap and ensure every mother has the support she needs. 📖 Explore the 2024 BMS & CF Indexes: https://lnkd.in/dNRx-num World Health Organization UNICEF U.S. Breastfeeding Committee

🌍🤱 Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week! 🌍🤱 Breastfeeding is crucial for infant health, yet there’s still work to be done. According to the National Family Health Survey 2019-21 (NFHS-5), only 41.4% of newborns are breastfed within the first hour of delivery. While the rate of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months has risen from 55% to 64% between 2015-16 and 2019-21, timely initiation of breastfeeding remains a challenge. Tdh India along with our local partner Sundarban Social Development Centre (SSDC) organized an awareness session on breastfeeding. Presenting a snap shot of that session on why breastfeeding is so important and how we can help improve these numbers. Let’s raise awareness and support new mothers in giving their babies the healthiest start! 💪👶 #WorldBreastfeedingWeek #BreastfeedingAwareness #HealthyBabiesIndia
