What does it mean when we "center" something? I had a fascinating discussion this week with a doctoral student about the concept of patient-centered care, and it turns out that the term still needs to be fully operationalized. Conceptual models exist, which helps somewhat, but there still needs to be definitional clarity about the essential meaning. Likewise, client-centered, student-centered, and customer-centered care are vague terms that reflect our intuitions and assumptions about what that centering looks like, not robust research about it. Given that, how do we teach new practitioners about the idea? Should we be teaching it? How are we measuring outcomes if we need clarification on our interventions? What exactly is being centered, by whom, and how?

This McKinsey report does a good job of highlighting the need for AMCs to improve clinical operations—"for example, decreasing length of stay, increasing operating-room utilization, improving patient engagement and experience, and boosting physician productivity—and revenue yield management". We all know an OR minute is the most expensive minute in a hospital but the benefits extend through PACU to the floor making the entire workflow more visible and streamlined. The end result is more than financial. Patients are more satisfied as the surgical process is easier with less wait time for surgery, fewer cancellations, less time in the hospital, smoother discharges, etc. Every AMC should be considering the Qventus perioperative solution because it does all these things in spades. Yesterday, I posted the 161 competencies of an exciting, much needed, groundbreaking new subspecialty physician leadership board certification here: https://lnkd.in/gdp5BACc Today, there's more about this exciting new subspecialty certification and the eligibility requirements from American Board of Emergency Medicine for the "Health Care Administration, Leadership, and Management (HALM) which integrates expertise from #medicine, health systems science, #quality improvement, patient #safety, business, public health, communication, #computerscience, economics, #law, and other disciplines in a singular subspecialty certification. HALM-certified physicians are expected to contribute effectively to the future health care environment with an in-depth understanding of the ways by which executive leadership and their governance effect change in these complex health systems." "The physician must demonstrate that within the seven years (84 months) immediately preceding the date on which the physician submits an application, the physician will have held a position that demonstrates all of the listed responsibilities and an equivalent title for at least 24 months." I especially love the examples of organizational impact as admission criteria such as: o "Regular oversight of or participation in major negotiations with payers and/or industry to increase value and to include at-risk platforms o Oversight of designing, justifying, implementing, monitoring, and measuring large-scale process improvements o Oversight of organizational demand and capacity assessments with management of results to positively impact access, affordability, and satisfaction for patients o Medically leading organizations through regulatory, accreditation, or certification processes such as Joint Commission, ACGME, etc. o Oversight in an academic setting that improves learning and research o Oversight of processes to assess and improve professionalism and organizational culture." "The physician must successfully complete a fellowship of at least 12 months that reasonably addresses the HALM Core Content. The fellowship must be sponsored by an ACGME accredited residency program or ACGME-accredited institution."
