Sharjah's Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has launched the first phase of its electric bus operation, with 10 buses serving 3 intercity lines. This initiative supports the Climate Neutrality 2050 initiative and promotes green public transportation in the emirate. The move follows Abu Dhabi's launch of 'green' buses, including electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, on September 12. These eco-friendly buses operate on Route 65 between Marina Mall and Shams Boutik in Al Reem Island, reducing harmful pollutants and carbon emissions. By transitioning from diesel to renewable energy, Abu Dhabi expects to cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by over 100,000 metric tonnes. September 7 is the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies. A day when people worldwide unite to reduce air pollution. According to the UN Environment Programme, the transport sector is the fastest-growing contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, predicted to account for over 30% of total emissions. However, McKinsey reports that the sales of battery-electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles are expected to rise from 5% of new-car sales in 2023 to 100% by 2050 globally. The UAE has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 182 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030. At Al Khoory Group, we actively support the UAE’s environmental goals. Last year, Al Khoory Automobiles announced a partnership with Abu Dhabi's Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) to introduce Yutong electric buses into the city's public transport network. Several key Asia-Europe sea-air hubs have recorded a strong surge in tonnages in the last few weeks, as shippers continue to seek alternative logistics solutions due to the disruptions to container shipping caused by the attacks on ships in the Red Sea. Freight sources have reported, anecdotally, that some Asia-Europe sea-air hubs such as Dubai, Colombo and Bangkok have been inundated with air cargo in recent weeks, as cargo owners seek to replenish stocks in Europe that have run low – because containerships that would normally transit via the Suez Canal have been forced make the longer voyage around the Cape of Good Hope.
