Research investigating ways to put methane reducing technology into the paddock 27 March 2024 CN30 Project Manager, Julia Waite, said in the future, graziers looking to include a supplement with methane reduction benefits should be able to choose from multiple options – both in terms of the active ingredient and the method of delivery. “Grazing properties vary in their management regimes and risk appetite – which impacts the kinds of technologies that would be suitable,” Ms Waite said. In addition to productivity and safety trials, Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) is exploring how these additives can reach livestock in extensive systems. “Across the portfolio we have active trials looking at dosing through the water supply, lick-block through to a more out-there biodegradable bolus,” Ms Waite said. https://lnkd.in/gsEgEndC #sheepproducers #redmeat #climate #data #technology #research

The goal for any insetting program should be continuous and sustained improvements.

One of the parts I enjoyed much (when I stayed abroad) while attending the conference was meeting experts from various fields/sectors: universities, industry and communities (agriculture/animal husbandry), and representatives of state/federal governments. Listening to them share knowledge, stories and experiences in their respective functions. Making the scientific forum very rich in the latest and appropriate information. The theme that interests me the most is the utilization of waste and production by-products (BSP) used as raw materials for the animal feed or biogas industry, or other industries located around industrial sites that produce waste and BSP. The purpose of maintaining the proximity between the location of the landfill and BSP with the location (feed industry) of livestock is to reduce transportation and logistics costs, while also reducing the burden of nature to decompose waste, and of course ease the task of the city / regional government, including mitigating social problems that may arise from the accumulation of waste/pollutants. Currently my colleagues and I are replicating the process of reprocessing waste and BSP for animal feed, for farms near waste sites and landfill BSP. Waste and BSP still store important nutrients needed by livestock. Feed and nutrition are relatively healthier for livestock, while cheaper. While guaranteeing its availability. We offer our processed products to ruminant and poultry farmers in several locations in West Java and more widely in Central Java. -------- Great collaboration, healthy livestock, and dignified farmers

Canada is building a plan to offer carbon credits to farmers who reduce cow farts and burbs. This program is called the Reducing Enteric Methane Emissions from Beef Cattle (REME protocol). Here are some key points about the REME protocol: Incentive: Farmers who implement changes to reduce methane emissions from their beef cattle operations will be able to generate and sell offset credits. Credit value: Each offset credit represents one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) emissions reduced. Eligible changes: Examples of eligible changes include improving animal diets, implementing better manure management practices, and breeding for more efficient animals. Current stage: The draft protocol is open for public comment until February 6, 2024. Expected benefits: This program is expected to encourage farmers to reduce methane emissions from their operations, which will help Canada achieve its emissions reduction targets. 🚨Greenwash alert!🚨Are feed additives a silver bullet to livestock emissions? No. Great article explains why: 1) Most are untested, 2) Those that are more tested reduce methane only 10-30% in cattle (important to note that cattle don't just emit methane, so that's a far lower % reduction of total emissions, 3) Feed additives very difficult to administer to most grazed cattle, because they need to be fed at least once/twice per day in mixed with concentrate feeds, 4) there are considerable cost and logistical barriers to many farmers adopting them. In conclusion, feed additives "are unlikely to play more than a minor supporting role. Innovating beyond feed: 'new' technologies to 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 for livestock 🌱🐄🐄🌱🐄🐄🌱🐄🐄. Research is not only advancing the active ingredients to reduce methane emissions, but also exploring the method of delivery. A collaborative project involving Meat & Livestock Australia, the University of Sydney and AgCoTech Global is making great progress to offer practical solutions for extensive grazing systems (available for beef and dairy cattle) by exploring not only lick blocks, but also water supply and biodegradable boluses. Such advances underline our industry's commitment to environmental management through accessible and sustainable technologies.
