Canada is building a plan to offer carbon credits to farmers who reduce cow farts and burbs. This program is called the Reducing Enteric Methane Emissions from Beef Cattle (REME protocol). Here are some key points about the REME protocol: Incentive: Farmers who implement changes to reduce methane emissions from their beef cattle operations will be able to generate and sell offset credits. Credit value: Each offset credit represents one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) emissions reduced. Eligible changes: Examples of eligible changes include improving animal diets, implementing better manure management practices, and breeding for more efficient animals. Current stage: The draft protocol is open for public comment until February 6, 2024. Expected benefits: This program is expected to encourage farmers to reduce methane emissions from their operations, which will help Canada achieve its emissions reduction targets. If only they had stopped the Dinosaurs trumping they may still be here.
Lots of job creation there - official cow fart and burp counters. 🤔
