PM E-Drive Scheme The PM E-Drive scheme replaces the previous Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid and) Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme, which had been in effect since 2015. The FAME initiative had a total outlay of INR 11,500 crore and was instrumental in supporting the adoption of over 1.3 million electric vehicles. However, with the expiration of FAME II in March 2024, the government sought to introduce a more comprehensive and targeted approach to further stimulate the EV market. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that localization is a key focus of the PM E-Drive scheme, ensuring that domestic technologies and supply chains are developed to support the growing EV ecosystem. This aligns with the broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which seeks to promote self-reliance in various sectors, including automotive. Effective roadside inspection with focus on a well working emission system. Last week Denmark had the honor of hosting the annual NORDUK conference. An event for road transport authorities and business representatives through Northwest Europe to share and learn from each other. I had the pleasure of giving a talk on Experiences and reflections on Plume chasing. Through my work at the Danish Road Traffic Authority, I have co-developed a groundbreaking approach to measure the NOx emission from Heavy duty vehicles as part of our roadside inspection – Smart selection of vehicles for a qualified control. As smart selection we use plume chasing where the measurement is carried out on the highway without stopping the vehicles. Hence, it is possible to select vehicles for roadside that have a high emission of NOx. I was invited to give my insight of the project and how this has been implemented in the daily inspection scheme. The NOx emission of a defect or manipulated vehicle can be up to 40 times higher than the emission of a well working vehicle. Therefore, it is important to maintain the emission system.
