In anticipation for tomorrow's announcement on the second Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA) by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, RenewableUK have published our latest response below: 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗨𝗞 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗔 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: https://lnkd.in/eK85g6sm As a successor to 2013’s Electricity Market Reform package, the REMA package should set out enduring options that will lay the foundation for our future energy system. The reforms should not disrupt investment flows through radical options, but rather act as the bedrock of investor confidence and market attractiveness 📊 ⚡ #REMA #electricity #marketreform #energycrisis #energybills #investment Yonna Vitanova Ana Musat Barnaby Wharton Nick Hibberd David Stewart Nathan Bennett

We strongly support the establishment of a future-facing NESO with energy demand at its heart. Debates over policy, politics, and prices have lost sight of who the system of turbines, wires, and pylons exist for. Without energy demand in the room, it is impossible to devise solutions and design markets that meet its needs. Today, we call on Government, the regulator, and ESO to start implementing the necessary changes to governance needed to make NESO a success for energy demand. Transforming a private entity into a public body with immense power and influence over the future of critical national infrastructure cannot, and should not, be underestimated. It requires a reformation, not an evolution.
DEMANDING MORE: How the National Energy System Operator can empower energy demand 💡 Today the ADE have published a report that considers 5 core questions in the establishment of the National Energy System Operator (NESO): 🔎 What is at stake? 🔎 What are NESO’s legal obligations? 🔎 How does the ESO stack up? 🔎 What conclusions can be drawn? 🔎 How do we move forward? The report finds that if NESO imports outdated practices from the ESO (Electricity System Operator) consumers will be prevented from fully benefiting from the clean energy future. Furthermore, the report shows that current market structures are not inclusive demand side flexibility, which is a crucial component in balancing renewable generation and could save the country £14.1 billion per year by 2040. Explaining shortfalls, embracing challenges, and executing change is imperative for our system operator to reach Clean Power by 2030. Read the full report here ▶ https://lnkd.in/eFtiAQjB

🔌 Electricity Prices in Europe Go Negative – Why It's a Concern 🌍 The surge in renewable energy across Europe has led to periods of excess electricity production, resulting in commercial power generators selling at negative prices. While it might sound beneficial for households, it unfortunately doesn't mean lower bills. Negative prices can undermine the financial viability of expanding renewable energy projects. For a sustainable future, we need to find balanced solutions that support both renewable growth and economic stability. 🌱⚡ #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #EnergyEconomics

We welcome the UK’s public consultation on #LongDurationEnergyStorage (LDES). Addressing the needs and challenges for #energystorage over prolonged periods of low #renewableenergy generation or high demand is pivotal to ensuring flexibility and reliability in our future decarbonised power system. As such, this consultation is not only a crucial step for the UK but also a pioneering initiative in Europe. 👉 The consultation rightfully acknowledges the crucial role that LDES plays in delivering a flexible energy system capable of integrating high volumes of low-carbon power to reach the UK's net zero targets while reducing costs for consumers. According to the Department for Energy Security & Net-Zero, deploying up to 20 gigawatts (GW) of LDES is estimated to result in system savings of at least £24bn! 👉The consultation is market-driven and aims to align with the highest system value, ensuring that market signals are maintained. 👉By taking into account market barriers faced by LDES technologies such as revenue certainty, high upfront capital costs and long build times, the framework will lay the foundation for unlocking the full potential of LDES and the transition to a more resilient clean energy system.
