It's Hard to Make New Things Last week, I was watching the reaction to the promo video for the AI necklace 'Friend'. It's supposed to be like having a friend with you all the time. Some people loved it. Some people hated it (me included). It got me thinking about how tough it is for founders to innovate. Inevitably: 1. New ideas are rarely welcomed. 2. Most people will call them stupid. 3. Even worse, you might start believing them. Resistance is part of the journey. Now while the thought of sharing my bushwalk with a talking necklace seems funny to me, I'll also have to admit that.. you know.. this product may not be actually for me 🤷♂️ Doesn't make it a bad product. I went to a 1st Mondays event that Startup San Diego sponsored last night. It's an organization focused on building the startup community in San Diego. It was hosted a ClickUp which incidentally operates from this amazing building downtown. The nightscape is inspiring and the back patio looks directly onto Petco Park where the San Diego Padres play. The event included networking and a moderated panel of experts, four women and one guy. They were all producers or executive producers of a new movie being released called, "Show Her the Money." It was fascinating to hear these women and man, all of whom own and operate venture funding firms, discuss the underserved market that is women and minority-owned businesses. Women-owned businesses receive only 2% of all funding that is allocated from venture capital companies. That's a shocking and low number. Grace Chui-Miller, Chief Financial Officer at Correlation Ventures, was one of the panelists. She shared that her firm has $500MM under management and that 15% is invested in women-owned companies. Notable about that figure is that it's 7x more than the average. All the panelists are making a focused effort to help women and minority-owned startups. It was inspiring to hear their collective vision and that they're putting their money where their mouths are. Not only are they a source of capital, but they provide ideas, guidance, and mentorship working to give fledgling businesses a real shot at succeeding. What an impact they're making!
