Ever get trapped in that 'all or nothing' way of thinking? When you can't quit travel entirely so why even try to reduce your air miles or your car use? Or when you're never going to cut out all plastic so you might add well stop shopping at the bulk store. My mind loves all or nothing thinking, so I have to make a conscious effort to think differently. I can't grow all the food I'd like to at the moment, but that doesn't mean I can't plant my own salad greens and herbs in pots. (Side note: It took me 2 months to admit that I could at least grow something, and now, a few weeks later, I have my own SALAD and it was SO worth doing!) The other thing to keep in mind is that lots of little things actually do add up to a significant change in our household carbon footprints. They also make our lives better: good bread is better for us than the industrial stuff, and joining our community garden is about the connections, the learning, the vitamin D and getting our hands dirty, as well as the silverbeet we get to take home at the end of the day. Little things keep us connected to the big issues in a way that is healthy and balanced, and they serve as daily reminders that we can make change, and that we care about people and planet. They motivate us to be activists in every way we can be, from bringing our reusable cup to voting on climate. What little things are you loving at the moment? #permacultureillustrator #brennaquinlan #fromlittlethingsbigthingsgrow

Today, Earth Day 2024, the League to Save Lake Tahoe stands proudly behind the groundbreaking single-use plastic water bottle ban in South Lake Tahoe and Truckee—a significant step in our ongoing mission to protect and preserve our beloved Lake. This transformative policy wasn't an overnight accomplishment; it is the fruit of a decade's worth of litter data collection, community engagement, and science-led initiatives. The League's approach has always been data-driven. From 2014 to 2023, through countless cleanup events, our volunteers have gathered substantial evidence of the plastic problem in the Basin, collecting over 20,100 plastic bottles, 31,300 plastic caps, and 163,800 pieces of unidentifiable plastic debris. Armed with this compelling data, we have raised awareness and crafted a narrative that spurred action and policy change. The League prepared for this transition by focusing on education and readiness. Our incredible Community Engagement team hit the streets, ensuring residents, visitors, and commercial vendors were prepared for the switch. Their hard work encouraged the adoption of sustainable alternatives and amplified the League's message that small changes in our daily habits can have a profound impact on our environment. Let's raise a glass (of clear and delicious Tahoe tap water) and join us in celebrating this pivotal movement. Support the cause, spread the word, and embrace the alternatives. #EarthDay2024 #PlasticFreeTahoe #DataDrivenChange #EnvironmentalEducation #KeepTahoeBlue #TahoevsPlastics

Q: Why focus on pumpkin waste at Halloween? 🎃 A: Because it's a perfect hook 🪝 When a third of all food produced globally gets wasted, it might seem odd to concentrate on something so niche. 🤔 But we've learnt that if you want to drive behaviour change, you need to be specific and find a good hook. And what's better than Halloween? 👻 Sustainable behaviour change can only happen when people are willing 𝗮𝗻𝗱 able to make choices that are good for the environment. With pumpkins, that means everyone has a role to play: • Businesses can reduce waste by promoting pumpkins as delicious food • Communities can bring people together and accelerate change • Individuals can take simple actions that add up ⬇️ Swipe below for more info about how we create change through pumpkins (as well as more cute pictures of pumpkins with goggly eyes - how could you resist?) ++ P.S. I'm CEO of environmental charity Hubbub. We create campaigns with business, government and civil society that inspire environmental action. Today is #WorldEarthDay2024 "Earth Day is a reminder of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability, encouraging us to come together and take action for a healthier planet and brighter future." Earthday.org. We totally agree. From our very beginnings we have been very aware of our environment, planting trees and encouraging indigenous wildlife to return to our ranges and land. We also know that planting indigenous trees and hedgerows benefits our hens too, making them more content and improving their welfare and production. It is a win win for everyone and a model that is sustainable, replicable and good for our planet.
