The International Air Cargo Association TIACA’s new survey reveals a bigger picture for air cargo… the pressure for sustainability. This survey of more than 280 air cargo professionals found that 67% of participants had felt the pressure to implement more sustainable practices. A large portion of the pressure for sustainability comes from customers, employees and business partners, according to the respondents. In the coming year, The International Air Cargo Association TIACA is set to introduce a freshly certified carbon offsetting initiative designed to benefit smaller companies, enhancing their sustainability efforts. The 36th International Air Transport Association (IATA) Ground Handling Conference (IGHC) will focus on integrating more sustainable practices into all aspects of ground handling operations. Icelandair will host IGHC in Reykjavík, Iceland, from 7-9 May 2024, with discussions focusing on achieving the industry’s net zero CO2 emissions by 2050 goal, talent retention and development, and strategic investments for long-term financial success. "For aviation to grow its economic and social benefits, effective and more sustainable ground operations are crucial. By prioritising people, more sustainable operations, and financial resilience we are building a more robust ground handling sector. Earlier this year, The International Air Cargo Association TIACA released the fourth comprehensive study undertaken on the air cargo industry’s sustainability position.   The results have been analyzed, compared to previous reports and published as the 2024 Insights Report to demonstrate the progress the industry has made towards a more sustainable future. The survey reveals, for instance, that companies see a clear link between their ESG performance and their reputation (85%) and attractiveness (73%) but less so for their bottom-line (39%). Furthermore, while most air cargo stakeholders (58%) focus on environment when talking about sustainability, 22% of them integrate at least 3 dimensions to their sustainability definition, in line with the global use of the ESG Terminology (Environment, Social, Governance). As the industry mobilizes to fully embrace sustainability, our responsibility is both individual and collective, each and everyone of us having a part to play.
