We have four projects underway being pilot tested in order for best practices to be promote nationally. These projects specifically empower residents to have control over their personal and community life, and #CNAs to grow in their career and nursing home roles. 👉 We'll be releasing a microsite later this week with "how to" guides. 🌟 Strengthening our voice for consensus of solutions. We're continuing to bring together diverse voices to identify solutions (big and small) we can all agree on. 👉 This week we'll have three consensus-backed federal policy recommendations to move forward with necessary shifts. 🌟 Seeking partners as we can't do it alone. 👉 We need help funding and scaling other promising projects to: incentivize household models, ensure surveyors have training in person-centered care, and make person-centered care planning a part of nursing home electronic health records. This is American Heart Month. “During American Heart Month, we’re celebrating all the bold hearts who have made an impact in saving lives through CPR,” said Nancy Brown, American Heart Association chief executive officer. “At the American Heart Association, it’s our vision to advance health and hope for everyone, everywhere. Children as young as nine can learn CPR and since nearly 3 out of 4 cardiac arrests that do not happen in a hospital, occur in the home, it's critical that all families know how to perform CPR.” CPR – or cardiopulmonary resuscitation – is an emergency lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. During American Heart Month, the Association is offering four ways to learn CPR and join the Nation of Lifesavers, as an individual, family, organization or community at heart.org/nation. This. Teaching “Family & Friends CPR for the layman, is something I enjoy doing for this reason alone. The more who know how to recognize the symptoms and act fast, the better. There is no certification at the end, though it is super informational and the cost is minimum in comparison to the traditional heartsaver course. The resources are all AHA so the gold standard is there! I beg of anyone to push for these, you can work them into more than the average individual may realize; They make for effective team dynamics exercises for work. Mom/parent group meet ups? Book a local instructor. You could find an amazingly engaging instructor (cough cough wink) and host one at your next family reunion. Practical baby shower addition for the friends and family. I have taught this course for all of the above and more. Family & friends is a cost effective AHA curriculum course and it teaches the basics of hands only CPR. Almost ANYONE can save a life. But most importantly, #educationsaveslives

Wow! I had the true privilege and honor to be in a room last evening with an amazing group of Vanderbilt University Medical Center physicians. The physician council meets on a monthly basis and this month we had a holiday reception. They each shared a story about a proud moment they have had in their career as a doctor. The stories were truly amazing and I think reconnected us all on the difference made in the very noble profession of medicine. What did I walk away with? 1) The practice of medicine is not always about doing something but sometimes about just being there, with and for another person. 2) There are a lot of up's and down's in caring for others but it can be the middle ground where you see the differences. 3) It starts with caring and as long as one cares the what and how will follow. 4) Lives have been saved based on taking risks and chances. People who probably should not have walked out of the hospital did because of the skill and compassion shown by health care professionals. 5) Don't give up. Heard numerous stories of adversity and individuals not wanting to engage or give up and because of the empathy shown by a doctor they engaged, were helped, and are now advocates for others stricken with their conditions to get help. An amazing group of humans. I finished by sharing that they shared 20 stories of lives forever changed, including their own, but the ripples are so much larger. There are countless families celebrating this holiday season with a loved one because of the amazing skill and care provided by all the professionals in the Health Care Industry.
