It is no longer news but a fact that Nigeria—as big as it is—has only less than 50 lions left in the wild. But how did we get here? One of the reasons—aside from poaching—why the population of lions are in decline is habitat loss. The natural habitat of lions is in the wild or forests and Nigeria’s forests deplete at an annual rate of 4%, endangering wild lives, per Bavijas Research. In Africa, there are currently around 23,000 lions left in the wild, so few that they’ve now been officially classified as ‘vulnerable’, by the WWF. The lion, the magnificent big cat, is the symbol of Africa! Join the campaign to protect our remaining lions by advocating for the preservation of our forest reserves. Keep them wild. Keep us safe! #ForestConservation #LandRestoration #Africa

Happy #WorldElephantDay2024! Today, we celebrate the majestic elephants that symbolize wisdom and play a vital role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystems. 🌍 #Biodiversity Yankari Game Reserve, home to Nigeria’s largest surviving elephant population, stands as a beacon of hope. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of @Wildlife Conservation Society Nigeria, nearly all poaching has been eliminated since 2015, allowing these gentle giants to thrive. But challenges like human-elephant conflict and habitat loss still threaten their future. On this #WorldElephantDay, let's not only celebrate these incredible creatures but also recognize the ongoing work to protect them. The efforts at Yankari are a shining example of how strong law enforcement, community collaboration, and conservation strategies can make a difference. Let’s continue to commit to safeguarding elephants and their habitats for generations to come. 🐘🌿 Happy World Elephant Day! #ExploreExperienceConserve #WorldElephantDay2024 #YankariGameReserve #WCSNigeria

This year of #ThaiElephantDay2024, we celebrate by launching 'We're Ele-friends: Allies for a safer future for wild elephants.’ Throughout March, we will showcase the result of over two decades of conservation collaboration to effectively manage conflict and create a sustainable future of coexistence between humans and elephants in Kuiburi. All of the key stakeholders in and around Kuiburi National Park work hand in hand to reduce conflicts between humans and wild elephants, resulting in a thriving wild elephant population within Thailand. In the past, Thailand's wild elephant population was declining due to factors such as poaching, habitat destruction, and fragmentation. In Kuiburi National Park, human elephant conflict was very intense, leading to deaths of both people and elephants. Through effective cooperation and coordination, these issues are being addressed and the park is moving from conflict towards coexistence. Learn more about how Kuiburi effectively manages Human-Elephant Conflict as we unveil our docu-series. Join us as we delve into the origins of ‘The Conflict’ in an upcoming episode. Stay tuned! #WeAreElefriends #SaferFutureforWildElephants #WWFThailand #TogetherPossible #ThaiElephantDay2024 #EllyAlly

"Indigenous Peoples and local communities are the best guardians of our territories because we know the biodiversity, the rivers, and the forest. We see the territory as part of ourselves. That is why we take care of it. That is why we advocate for it." Wider Anderson Guaramag Umenda Ecuador is the only country that recognises nature’s right to exist and thrive in its constitution. It is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, and Indigenous Peoples have stewarded its lands and waters since time immemorial. However, the communities closest to and most dependent on Ecuador’s precious nature are still fighting to protect it. Here we share three stories told by Indigenous people standing up for Ecuador’s rivers, shared at a recent online event about the work supported by our Freshwater Programme. https://lnkd.in/evKsnYmw #Ecuador #IndigenousPeoples #Conservation Description: The Indigenous resistance protecting Ecuador's rivers: Three stories told by Indigenous people standing up for the rights of nature. #DYK Ontario has already lost 40-50% of its historic boreal caribou distribution? Local caribou populations across Ontario are facing high-risk situations. Caribou are indicators of the Boreal Forest’s health. They thrive in landscapes that are largely untouched by industrial development. Protecting Canada’s remaining boreal caribou critical habitat is essential to maintaining fully functioning ecosystems within boreal forests and wetlands for generations to come. Protecting caribou habitat would also help Canada meet its international commitment to protect 30% of lands and inland waters by 2030. This #earthweek, tell Canada it’s time to to protect threatened caribou habitat in Ontario: https://buff.ly/44sFtu1 Learn more about caribou conservation policy: https://lnkd.in/gjZrY4TN #earthweek2024
