#sema2023 is in the books for me. Here's the recap: ➡️ 27 calendar items Mon eve - Thurs eve spanning all three LVCC halls and several off-site after hours events/meetings ➡️ Many additional chance meetings or impromptu conversations at the show or at after hours events ➡️ 73,736 steps (over 27,000 steps on Thursday alone) ➡️ 36 miles walked ➡️ 58 floors of stairs ➡️ Somewhere between two and three liters of water consumed each day ➡️ One appt canceled by me ➡️ One appt missed by the other party ➡️ One appt missed by me ➡️ 5 calendar items rescheduled (one of them changed 3x) ➡️ Over 6 hours spent in the #sema Members lounges in meetings or recharging and refreshing ➡️ Nearly 4 dozen relationships made, renewed or strengthened ➡️ Didn't have a chance to get to #aapex at all ➡️ I had a greater number of productive, positive, conversations about employers' hiring needs than I've EVER had at any previous show #myclientsarehiring The #automotiveaftermarket is strong and is headed for an amazing 2024. A client recently asked about reducing unnecessary noise pollution by preventing alarms from reaching clinicians already present with patients. "...Can Connexall do that?" Here's my raw, honest, hopeful feedback about my APIC '24 experience as a First-Time attendee, passionate clinician, and #CleanFreak. 👇 I care about these people -- and perhaps more importantly, these are the people helping every other clinician across this country #CareBetter for every patient who enters our doors. This event is so important. I do want to highlight, right out of the box, my experience would have been COMPLETELY different without having my IP travel agent and conference tour guide, Jill Holdsworth, CIC,FAPIC,NREMT,CRCST, CHL to shadow every step of the way. Because of this I HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you are a #SterileProcessing professional interested in attending a future APIC that you ensure you find an IP to connect with as your conference buddy. This event is quite large, and has a much different cadence than other conferences (such as HSPA) that you may be more familiar with, so I can see it being quite overwhelming if you were to try to fly solo. (Maybe this kind of IP-SPD buddy match is something the Transmission Control Advisory Group can offer next year?) Outside of the notes below, one more thing that I do want to politely ask the APIC planners to consider: This hyper anti-"suitcasing" thing -- it's probably a little too much, guys. I get that you want vendors and companies to buy booths. And I can totally see the annoyance of extremes like outside folks handing out brochures in the lobby or whatnot. But there's an entire demographic of innovators, networkers, consultants, and clinicians (like me) who don't even know what your conference is about. If our first introduction to the event is warning signs around every corner, email threats, and censorship of run-of-the-mill industry conversations, you're stifling tremendous opportunity for organic growth, networking, and collaboration to drive real, positive change. Your organization is better than this. I know it. I hope future events find a better, more welcoming balance here. Would be happy to share more of my thoughts if you'd like to discuss. Resilient....not sure I like the word anymore....as it has as many negative connotations as positive in the workforce these days, especially with the rise of burnout, exhaustion, and poor mental health being a universal issue across all industries. Oxford dictionary meaning rings true however: (of a person or animal) able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions. "babies are generally far more resilient than new parents realize" The very nature of what we do for a career makes us resilient...however, job design, workplace well-being, and taking an integrated approach to our responsibilities as an individual, a team member, and most importantly as an organisation will be necessary for a thriving future. Despite it looks like I am having a lie-down 😴 .... I am very excited to be talking about it in a BIG PICTURE sense in regards to the future of our profession on a global platform with Sarah Hoggan DVM from the USA and Andy Green from the UK next week. We all share different perspectives but have the same #commonpurpose and #goal...patient advocacy and how this melds with our people advocacy in 2024.
