Fostering deep partnerships for impact in #bioeconomy, #health and #energy innovation. The University of Queensland and The University of Tokyo are partnering to accelerate the transition towards a low-carbon economy. Queensland Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment, Cameron Dick attended the signing in Japan of a new Memorandum of Understanding between the two global top 50 universities. Signed by Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology AIBN Director Professor Alan E. Rowan and Professor Masakazu Sugiyama, Director of the Renewable Fuel Global Network at Tokyo’s Research Centre for Advanced Science and Technology, the MOU sets out to help solve complex challenges in #energy, #health and the #bioeconomy. 

I still can't believe what's happening in #Germany's #battery research sector. This puts us even further behind the competition and will potentially have a strong impact on related industries in the long term, such as the #automotiveindustry. Unless, of course, the industry moves elsewhere (which we are already seeing). Good for the industry, but not good for the people in Germany. Most of the young scientists who are driving innovation in this area are working on 50-60% of the standard income anyway. But they are the ones who are pushing innovation the most. I am not sure how we are going to keep up with the rest of the world in this fundamental change in the energy sector.

DGIST team sheds light on mechanisms enhancing efficiency in thin-film solar cells. by Riko Seibo - Tokyo, Japan (SPX) Researchers from Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), in collaboration with academics from Ewha Womans University, Incheon National University, and MIT, have made significant progress in understanding electron-hole separation in kesterite thin-film solar cells. This discovery is poised to enhance solar cell efficiency and support the transition to sustainable energy sources. Solar cells convert sunlight into electricity and are viewed as vital to future energy solutions due to their environmental benefits and unlimited raw material-the sun. Kesterite thin-film solar cells, composed of copper, zinc, and tin, offer a cost-effective solution. However, their efficiency has been limited. The team's study focused on the mechanisms of electron and hole separation within the light-absorbing layers of these cells. They utilized scanning probe microscopy to examine how these separations occur, particularly at the interfaces between crystals, which is critical for improving performance. https://lnkd.in/dCQhyZfr

Partnering to innovate advanced materials will be extremely beneficial for the two parties, with these innovative materials essential for advancing renewable energy, batteries, zero-emission buildings, semiconductors, and many other technologies. Announced by Iliana Ivanova Ivanova, EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, and Hiroki Matsuo, Japan’s Vice-Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy, the partnership will help strengthen critical areas of the economy.
