Transition to sustainable #energy while assuring #energysecurity and #energyaccess along the way requires #collobration. This in turn requires knowledge of plans and perspectives of others, especially of neighbors. The target of #Estonia is to generate it’s whole electricity consumption from #renewables by 2030. Due to the high potential #windenergy is the best technology to reach this target. Through balancing capabilities and requirements, availability of materials and workforce developments in Estonia will influence the #energytransition in the Baltics and other countries. The Estonian Wind Power Association will host Estonian Wind Energy Conference 2024 on February 13 and 14. The webcast is free of charge and open to everyone (and it does not require travelling #sustainability). The lineup of great speakers will allow to see #pointofview of governments, developers, energyproducers, society, #TSO s, and investors. What are the similarities, and what are the differences in transforming US energy systems compared to Europe? I was glad to share some experiences from Germany in workshops this week – many thanks to PJM Interconnection, New York Power Authority and NYSERDA for the sessions and the discussions! Not really a surprise, differences are rather in the details on the technical side of #energytransition. After all, PV panels, wind turbines, EV chargers, electrolyzers etc. are the same all over the world. In regulation however, differences are huge – guiding different paths to achieve the sustainable energy systems of the future. The common call to action is: We need to be faster 🏃♀️ , in order to keep up with the growing demand for renewable energy. And we need to design and implement flexibility ✨ in all parts of the system, in order to match the volatile characteristic of renewables. We’re excited to announce our site in Lessines will soon be powered by two new wind turbines! 🌍 Last week, EOL’WAPI, a collaboration between IDETA - Agence de Développement Territorial, IPALLE Intercommunale de gestion de l'environnement and Luminus was granted the permit to install two wind turbines near our operations site. These 2 new wind turbines will support our sustainability goals and our aim to make our site operations net-zero GHG emissions by 2030. They will provide the equivalent of the electrical consumption of about 4,200 households and cut CO2 emissions by 6,600 tons annually. Plus, they’ll support Wallonia’s energy transition goals, contributing to the region’s 2030 wind energy target. Set to be operational by 2026, these turbines are a key part of our commitment to sustainability. Along with the growth of installed wind power capacity, the business case calculations of wind parks will drastically change.     How will the financial attractiveness of wind power projects in Europe evolve as we move into a future of more and more installed capacity?     In the early years of renewable power production, because the amount of renewable power was marginal, the market clearing price usually was determined by a conventional source. When wind speeds were high, there was a notable contribution margin to be earned for a wind farm operator. Paired with national subsidies the business case for installing new wind parks was quickly made.    Today, as the installed volatile capacity has grown over the threshold of peak load in certain countries, we will likely see power prices close to zero in an increasing number of hours of overproduction a year.   Equally, at times when the power prices are high and a profit could be made, this will likely be due to low wind speeds and hence, the wind farm operator will not make much money either.    Finding creative and both technologically and financially viable solutions to balancing renewable power generation and loads at any given moment will pave the way for the next breakthrough in expanding wind power integration in the European energy markets.    I am looking forward to the keynotes and some inspiring conversations about this topic in the next days at the WindEurope conference in Bilbao.  If you're attending and would like to discuss, let me know, I would be delighted to meet at the conference.   #windenergy #energy #WindEurope #offshoreWind
