Green Hydrogen will be a key contributor to reaching the UK’s 2020 Net Zero target, particularly by facilitating the decarbonisation of critical sectors such as industry and transportation. In December 2023, the Net Zero Hydrogen Fund announced the selection of 11 green hydrogen projects in its first Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR1), collectively contributing 125MW of capacity. This significant achievement marks an important step towards the goal of developing 10GW of green hydrogen capacity by 2030. Looking forward, a second Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR2) is set to open in 2024, further accelerating progress towards this objective. Dalkia UK is currently actively engaged in a number of these critical projects, and last week, our teams had the opportunity to present our dedicated Green Hydrogen offering at the Foresight Hydrogen Live in Liverpool and the 5th UK CCUS & Hydrogen Decarbonisation Summit in Leeds. It was great to engage with partners and representatives of this growing industry and discuss how we can contribute to the successful delivery of these critical Net Zero projects. Check out this recent opinion piece in Utility Dive Dive from our own Cihang Yuan and Daniel Riley on the importance of the strategic deployment of #CleanHydrogen for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors—especially the need for policy supporting strategic end uses that will set the industry on the right path and enable scale!
Government support for #cleanhydrogen must prioritize high-impact use cases that lack alternative decarbonization solutions. In our new opinion piece on Utility Dive, Cihang Yuan and I suggest how the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s new demand-side mechanisms can help the Regional Hydrogen Hubs make this happen. https://lnkd.in/eKGXDV9R
Supporting strategic end uses is key to making hydrogen hubs the building blocks to scale

Hydrogen is poised to play a central role in the UK's journey to net zero. As a clean energy carrier, low-carbon hydrogen offers versatility – providing a pathway to decarbonise sectors that are difficult to electrify and affording flexibility across the energy system. Developed in partnership with The University of Edinburgh and British Geological Survey, our recent research report for the Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC) uses new methods to model hydrogen storage demand and capacity in the East Coast Cluster – one of the UK’s key decarbonisation clusters. Large-scale underground hydrogen storage (UHS) will underpin the ability to integrate hydrogen into a decarbonised energy system. Green v/s Blue Hydrogen: Evaluating the Cost Competitiveness Despite recent advancements in reducing the cost of green hydrogen, reaching cost parity with blue hydrogen remains a complex challenge. Green hydrogen, produced from renewables, is steadily getting cheaper, but blue hydrogen—produced from natural gas with CO2 capture—faces its own set of uncertainties. According to Ueckerdt, F. et al. 2024, the future of hydrogen’s competitiveness will not only depend on technological improvements and energy prices but also on carbon costs and regulatory factors concerning life-cycle emissions. In regions where natural gas prices are high (around 40 €/MWh), the viability of blue hydrogen is significantly compromised. Investment in blue hydrogen might be deterred by these uncertainties. However, in areas where natural gas prices drop to ≤15 €/MWh, blue hydrogen could remain a strong player until at least 2040, provided CO2 capture rates exceed 90% and methane leakage is kept below 1%. Analyses suggest that the higher residual emissions from blue hydrogen might shorten its competitive advantage as green hydrogen approaches cost parity. Ultimately, the competitiveness of blue hydrogen will vary by region, influenced by local energy prices and CO2 capture standards. For those navigating the hydrogen landscape, staying informed and adaptable will be key. What strategies are you considering as this energy transition unfolds? #EnergyTransition #HydrogenEconomy #Sustainability #FutureOfEnergy Ref: Ueckerdt, F., Verpoort, P.C., Anantharaman, R., Bauer, C., Beck, F., Longden, T. and Roussanaly, S., 2024. Isthmus Energy Systems is focused on developing agrivoltaic projects at the intersection of energy, agriculture, and sustainability.
TerraformIndustries.com is scaling synthetic methane technology that can replace petrochemicals. Hydrogen is difficult to deal with so it's much better to immediately make something like ammonia or methane. Using methane allows you to continue synthesis of other chemicals like ethylene and eventually totally replace all Petrochemical products with H2 and CO2 using nothing but clean energy and chemistry... and Smart Grids to optimize the whole process. Can pair with agrivoltaics and gasification of biomass for more synthetic chemistry routes. Best to do this at Brownfield sites so the biomass is bioremediation and you can actually recover metals from the contaminated soil. Even better to use Metalplant.com approach for enhanced weathering to capture carbon and mine nickel from the biomass at the same time. Hydrogen will be developed for industrial applications first but many of those are petrochemical applications that need to go away soon anyways. In my opinion we should double down on the basic manufacturing of electrolyzers and vertically integrate the whole petrochemical replacement infrastructure with smart grids and agrivoltaics at shuttered coal plants. Can use a lot of that old infrastructure to be modified for gasfiers to make biochar and capture synthesis gas to replace natural gas in most applications for chemical manufacturing. The biochar can be value added to graphene and the nickel from Metal Plants process can also go to batteries along with the graphene. Solar panel recycling will be huge too. We really need silicon manufacturing in the US but that is a big task. Best to scale up the recycling now as a domestic supply for new solar manufacturing. Maybe someone wants to take on silicon, but I'm more focused on graphene and synthetic methane. The future will be very awesome 😎👍
