Stress in the health care field prior to COVID-19 😷🤕🤒 This is the topic we are discussing this week for my HIT 101 discussion board. I had a lot to say about it based on past research I have conducted on the topic. Health care burnout is no secret, and has been spoken on in several TED Talks I have watched but one specific stood out to me, so I spoke on it. Dr. Ed Ellison speaks on burnout in physicians back in 2017 (pre-COVID) in a TED Talk called: Doctors in Distress: Saving the Lives of Those Who Save Lives. It this Ted Talk he speaks on how the suicide rate amongst male physicians was on the rise at 40% more than the general population and the female physician suicide rate was at a 130% increase in 2017. Those numbers were very shocking to me for back then. #15 – No matter how gracious and clear I try to be, I’m often met with an accusatory remark blaming me for the bad news. In my line of work, I commonly hear: “So you’re just giving up on me?” 😠 E.g., Provider: “Unfortunately, continuing the diuretic is not helping, and is only hurting Sally’s kidneys.” / Sally’s family: “So, you’re just giving up on my mom?” 😥 Can you feel the tension? The wording could easily make us defensive, as if we need to “take it back” or apologize. But, in reality, the question has nothing to do with us. It’s all about the person’s perception of the bad news. 👨⚕️ The general public expects healthcare providers to FIX and HEAL. More accurately, we “cure sometimes, relieve often, comfort always” (Hippocrates). All medical cures come to their limits, and we are left with temporizing measures and comfort care. ➡ When someone pushes back against bad news, the goal, then, is to resist the urge to take offense. Instead, I try to rewind and help the person understand the medical condition, plus all the available medical options, so thoroughly they can see why we are (or are not) recommending further treatment. When I take the time to show the patient/family that I am sincerely trying to partner with them, they are often willing to partner with me again. 💡 In a difficult conversation, if you get resistance when you did not expect, slow down and assess understanding. 🤔 Can you think of applications to other industries? ________________________________ As a healthcare provider for the chronically ill and terminal, I give bad news every day and I have learned how to do it well—plus mistakes to avoid. 1 - Effective Communication * Use clear and direct language: Explain the patient's condition and treatment options in a way they can easily understand. * Listen attentively: Give the patient enough time to ask questions and express their feelings. * Be patient and friendly: Treat the patient with respect and understanding. 2-Empathy: * Put yourself in the patient's shoes: Try to understand the patient's feelings and concerns. * Show empathy and care: Express your concern for the patient's health and well-being. * Be supportive: Help the patient cope with their condition and treatment options. 3-Shared Decision-Making: * Involve the patient in decision-making: Discuss the treatment options available to the patient and help them choose the best option for them. * Respect the patient's wishes: Consider the patient's wishes and values when making treatment decisions. * Provide the patient with enough information: Help the patient understand the available treatment options, their risks, and benefits. 4-Respect: * Respect the patient's privacy: Keep the patient's medical information confidential. * Treat the patient with respect: Treat the patient with dignity and respect. * Be open and honest: Be truthful with the patient about their condition and prognosis. #patientexperience #patientcenteredcare #healthcare #patientengagement #qualityofcare

As doctors, we can feel that we must always maintain control and keep it all together in order to serve others. This expectation can feel deeply ingrained and often leaves little room for us to acknowledge our vulnerabilities and need for compassion. Yet, it is essential to remember that we, too, are human—deserving of the same kindness, support, and understanding we so generously extend to those we care for. The concept of common humanity invites us to shift our perspective to see beyond the titles and roles that define us in our clinical settings. It encourages us to recognise that we experience moments of doubt, fatigue, and emotional unease from time to time. This realisation is not a sign of weakness but a reminder of our shared human experience. In embracing our common humanity, we pave the way for a more compassionate and supportive medical community where doctors feel empowered to seek help, share their struggles, and care for their well-being without fear of judgment or stigma.
