Helping others has numerous benefits, from creating a sense of belonging and purpose to boosting self-esteem and overall wellbeing. Studies show that volunteering can even promote physiological changes in the brain linked with happiness. By helping those less fortunate, we can gain perspective and put our own circumstances in a more positive light. Plus, the positive impact we have on others can inspire generosity in those around us, creating a ripple effect throughout the community. So why not become a force for good and experience the many rewards of helping others? You are more powerful than you think. #dmaclifecoach

End of the year and holidays can be a stressful time for so many. Are you checking in with yourself?? Are you doing enough to take care of yourself?? ...and, when we have the capacity - are we checking in on others?? Its important to slow down and ensure that we are connecting with what's most important, whether that is through friends/family, exercise, volunteering or spirituality. When we align with our inner values daily, not only will it have lasting effects - it will also help to give us meaning and purpose What are some of your self-care practices? #WellnessWednesday - Volunteering is a great way to use your time constructively and give back to others. It can also provide physical and mental health benefits. Volunteering Makes You Feel Good - Giving feels good. Doing what you enjoy or volunteering releases endorphins, a natural pain reliever that creates a sense of well-being. It's sometimes called a "helper's high”. Volunteering Boosts Your Happiness - Engaging in meaningful activities can boost happiness. A study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies found that individuals who volunteer report greater happiness than those who do not. Volunteering Reduces Loneliness and Stress—Loneliness can increase cortisol levels, causing more stress, cognitive impairment, and a higher risk of inflammation, heart disease, and a weakened immune system. Volunteering Builds Friendships, Social Interaction, and Engagement - Sharing activities bring people closer together, help increase physical activity, and provide an opportunity to make new friends. Friends offer emotional support, build confidence, and reduce stress. Volunteering promotes social engagement and brain health. Volunteering Reduces Depression - Saying yes to a volunteer opportunity can lower depression levels, according to scientific research. So, find organizations that you can volunteer for and see how you're not only making a change in the world but also in yourself. #TAP #HireaSoldier #GoEarlyGoOften #MentalHealthMatters

Recently, I did an email on how volunteering can boost your mental wellbeing and overall health. This came from some reflections on my experience working with Shout UK as a helpline volunteer. For me, it’s really helped me to get outside my own head. We live in a type of world where we are constantly in our own heads. Queue “I need to do this; I should try this; I have to do this; I’m going to xyz." Volunteering brings a lot of gratitude for the life you GET to live and, from my experience, the appreciation of good, supportive people in my life and mental and physical stability. Volunteering can have a huge impact on your mental wellbeing and can reduce things such as stress, anxiety, and low mood while boosting gratitude and a sense of satisfaction. Helps even more when you have such a supportive community you volunteer with🫶🏻😇

Do you volunteer? If not, perhaps you should as it’s remarkably good for your health. See below for Why and make sure you get to number 11. I’ve been volunteering in different capacities almost my whole working life but it’s only more recently that evidence shows how beneficial volunteering can be to your mental health and wellbeing. Give it a go. Why is it beneficial? 1) social connection tends to be uplifting and fosters a sense of community and belonging 2) you might learn a new skill or two and learning keeps the brain active 3) you’re removed from your own life’s challenges for a time 4) it can help you to be more grateful and see new perspectives 5) you meet new people from all walks of life that can be exciting and grounding 6) it can, according to some research, make you healthier and live longer (connection plus activity plus using your brain can make you happier) 7) you’ll likely feel more positive about yourself as you give back to society 8) you’ll impact others’ lives, benefiting them; you’ll feel the benefits of selflessness by truly making a difference 9) self esteem improves as you feel a sense of accomplishment and meaning 10) you grow as a person as you may well be stretched outside of your comfort zone! and 11) it can support you in job applications as you not only develop new skills but you demonstrate a willingness to go over and above. I could go on. I highly recommend volunteering and organisations such as Mind LawCare - the mental health charity for the legal sector MHFA England® Oxfam Volunteering Ox, Cam, Herts, Berks and more others also recognise its value. Do you volunteer or are you inspired to now? If you want to volunteer but don’t know where to start, send me a message! Always willing to help. #mentalhealth #confidence #wellbeing #volunteer #voiunteering #professionalgrowth #personalgrowth
