My transition out of the Army did not start as planned. I didn't know what programs there were or how to use them. I didn't know about certifications or which ones mattered, and I had no clue how to leverage my network to get a job where I could support my family. Only after I learned the hard way did I promise that I would help every veteran I could achieve the best possible transition. That is why I wrote The Successful Veteran. This is a companion guide to help every veteran avoid the mistakes I made. It includes: -Timelines on transitioning -Advice on how to use LinkedIn -Effective networking -Certification programs broken down by sector which certifications relate to various industries -Spousal support -Skillbridge programs -Syracuse University’s Onward to Upward -Tech programs -Project management programs -Veteran Assistance Programs It also breakdowns many development/leadership programs for veterans. It is free to everyone, share it, edit it, make it better. By no means is this a complete guide and is still a work in progress(I am still working on the interview and resume chapters along with cleaning up the grammatical errors). During a persons military career multitasking is a necessary skill which develops over time. Towards the end of my career several of my Sailors would often make comments like "Chief, how were you at two meetings if different locations at the same time?" The answer would almost always have some mild humor with it, the answer "Magic". The truth which I explained a few times, after I realized how I managed it myself, was to communicate early and understand expectations for either meeting or "task". This is a soft skill that has proven to be essential in the civilian sector. A skill that as a Veteran or soon to separate Active Duty member you may not think of when building resumes and prepping for interviews. Veterans have an abundance of soft skills that were developed out of necessity due to "operational commitments", skills that otherwise would take twice as long to develop if not longer as a civilian. Trust me when I say have no fear about separation, if you are able to truly list out all of your strengths and knowledge you will have no issue marketing yourself to the best of your ability. Ask for help, do not struggle alone. You are an investment companies want to buy into! So take the chance and aim high, reach out to companies and ask questions.
