Beyond building a school garden, you are helping to: - Construct outdoor classrooms where our tamariki can learn things like literacy and numeracy outside of the usual four walls. - Create spaces for improved mental health and wellbeing, where tamariki get to connect with the taiao, and with each other. - Enhance understanding of the processes of growing fruits/vegetables, and creating potential for more locally grown food sources. - Increase consumption of fruit/vegetables and nurture better eating habits. This week, I went along to a Little Village volunteering day with one of our wonderful Raise Your Hands corporate supporters.   This was my third volunteering session at Little Village and each one has been different (as they are based on the donations that came in that week, as well as the time of year). So you might find yourself creating bundles of winter woolies, creating emergency packs to be distributed or getting ready for a season switchover and sorting swimwear.    This time it was all about the toys: we puzzled (no better way of making sure the correct pieces are there!), wiped down toys and even brushed the hair of some of the dolls so they are ready for their new homes.    On each and every one of these volunteering days, no matter what the volunteers were asked to help with, everyone has enjoyed getting stuck in and the experience has always been so positive.   But we get it, it’s not always possible for the whole team to get out of the office – and volunteering isn’t just about giving time – it’s about driving real, tangible value by matching skills to the specific needs of charities. So this week, as well as a hands-on volunteering day, we were also able to offer our partners a skills-based volunteering opportunity with Kidscape - you can read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/eYVNzZ9c   These two volunteering opportunities are so different yet they both have a direct impact on the frontline with marginalised communities and are a brilliant way of getting your team involved. ❗PLEASE SHARE❗ We are hoping to collect and recycle Christmas trees in January, for a donation to our charity. We are looking to take on tree collections in the following areas but we need your help! 🎄GL14 (Cinderford) 🎄GL15 (Lydney) 🎄GL16 (Coleford) 🎄GL17 (Mitcheldean) 🎄GL18 (Newent) 🎄 GL19 (Huntley) This will be taking place over 2 days in January, at present we are unsure which days but most likely mid Jan. In order for this to work we need help with the following… 1. Volunteers with vans/trucks with trailers to collect trees from the above postcodes via a mapped route (the most efficient route). 2. More yards to store the trees in once collected and where they can be chipped. We currently have one in Newent and one in Huntley. Ideally we need at least 1 in the Cinderford/Lydney area to make our collection trips most economical. 3. Use of a large wood chipper, preferably someone to chip it too. Arborists? More than 1 of these would be great to save travelling between postcodes. 4. Disposal of the chippings. Do you know of someone/somewhere that would want the chippings? Farmers? Allotments? To cover pathways? Are you, a family member, employer or colleague able to help James Hopkins Trust with this? Or do you know of anyone else that could? We are aware that it is often ‘Who you know, not what you know’. Maybe you cannot help with any of the above but your employer/company would consider sponsoring a hire van so we could do some collections instead maybe? We really need all the help we can get with this to make it a success and we believe that with the help of our loyal supporters, we can do just that. All of us here at JHT really want this to work and we’ve got everything crossed that this plan comes together. The Value of Volunteering 🌎 Since December, I've been volunteering on the Saturday morning’s at Stichting ROZE (Regionale Opvang Zwerfdieren Eindhoven), where I help in the dog department. This experience has brought me a lot, and I'd like to share some of the benefits of volunteering: 1. Stress Reduction: Volunteering provides a welcome break from the daily routine and helps reduce stress. Working with animals has a calming effect and brings a sense of peace. And if that isn’t convincing enough, the sight of the dogs’ faces often seals the deal. 2. Contributing to the Future of Shelter Animals: It feels good to contribute to the care and well-being of shelter animals. By volunteering, I help them on their way to a better life and a new home, which is incredibly rewarding. 3. Insight into Non-Profit Collaboration: Working at Stichting ROZE has given me insight into how a non-profit organization can achieve a lot with the support of volunteers. It's inspiring to see how passionate people come together to achieve common goals and make a positive impact. I encourage everyone to consider volunteering, whether it's at an animal organization or elsewhere that interests you. It's a valuable way to give back to the community and experience personal growth at the same time.

Volunteering - simple but rewarding 🫶🏼 Voluntary = Latin word voluntarius = which means "of one's free will." A service that is provided without expecting payment in return is often referred to as voluntary. One genuine approach to donate a small amount of your time for a worthy cause is through #volunteering. The ability to change your personal and professional life in unexpected ways is the best approach to encapsulate all the advantages of volunteering. Ultimately, #takingaction is always preferable to taking none at all.

Over the years, I've often likened fundraising to gardening! 🌱🌻 Fundraising is like tending to a garden of donors. You can't force them to give, but you can create and nurture an environment that encourages their generosity. 🌳🌷 A gardener can't make a plant grow, but they can provide the right conditions (the right soil, the right place in the garden, the right food, etc.) for growth to happen naturally. 👩🌾 Like a good gardener, you too can create the right conditions to unlock the generosity of your charity's donors. You can understand donors' needs and respond to them. You can build effective relationships with them. You can tell stories that resonate with their desire to impact the world. You can ask at the right time, for the right amount, in the right way... and more!
