Most UEF supported-developers are renewable energy companies that focus entirely on solar solutions, but Hotspot Network Limited is far from that. Hotspot Network is a telecoms company that operates mobile network infrastructure and provides wireless communications to the private sector. Hotspot has been deploying mobile base stations to improve network coverage in rural communities. With the UEF funding, the company will deploy 5KW solar systems across various communities in Nigeria which will also be used as charging stations for small electrical appliances including mobile phones. That means sustainably powered connectivity for rural communities. Watch this video to hear Deborah Ekwenye, Hotspot Network’s Business Development Manager explain how the UEF grant funding incentivizes them to develop products and services in line with SDG 7. #FinancingEnergyProsperity #SustainableDevelopment #RuralConnectivity #Infrastructure #MobileNetworks #UniversalEnergyAccess #Solarpower #Nigeria #HotspotNetworks #UEF

https://lnkd.in/d8JqT5Xx Eskom has just released their most recent grid availability data, presented in an engaging interactive map that drills down to the substation level. However, it's disconcerting to note that the grid constraints in South Africa have escalated to a critical juncture, with over half the country operating at maximum capacity. This challenging situation poses a significant obstacle to new generation projects. It underscores the need to scrutinize and potentially revise Curtailment rules, aiming to unlock additional capacity and pave the way for the expansion of renewable energy initiatives. Addressing these challenges head-on is crucial for sustaining and advancing the nation's energy landscape. #RenewableEnergy #EnergyTransition #GridInnovation #eskom #electricity #renewableenergy

As we continue in this journey of digital bridge building across rural unserved and underserved communities, we are happy to be beneficiaries of the UEF (Universal Energy Facility) SSPU grant to energize productive use activities in these communities. This grant will not only accelerate the spread of digital infrastructure in these rural communities but will also provide sustainable and scalable energy access that will anchor small scale productive use activities. #energyaccess #digitalinclusion #sustainabledevelopmentgoals

Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned utility, has dominated the energy sector for over a century. It monopolises generation and transmission while sharing distribution responsibilities with municipalities. However, roughly 80% of its generation comes from coal-fired power stations, and it faces other challenges. We expect that SA's energy sector reforms should open the market to greater private sector participation in power generation. The exemption of embedded projects from licensing requirements is a positive step that will simplify and expedite the process. Additionally, establishing the transmission system operator as a separate entity from Eskom will make market processes more efficient by enabling powerwheeling from generators to end users. Our report provides more detailed intelligence on the regulatory framework surrounding electricity generation in SA. https://lnkd.in/dcAZNMQi

Over the years, power sector reforms have been targeted at improving energy access in Nigeria through the sustained growth of the sector. However the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) continues to struggle with significant challenges that prevent it from meeting demand effectively. In a bid to integrate innovative solutions to solve recurrent challenges which hinder electricity generation and distribution, #NERC organized the summit on the accelerated scaleup of renewable energy (RE) and distributed energy resources (DER) in Nigeria. Participating in this summit granted me a first hand understanding of the collaborative efforts by DISCOs, investors, regulators and government agencies to drive the integration of DERs especially from RE sources in the NESI. I also understood the pivotal role of RE in expanding energy access and decarbonizing the environment. Panel discussions highlighted strategies for identifying gaps and de-risking of embedded generation to support the attainment of governmental targets as well as optimal financing models that support the development of renewable energy projects. A huge thank you goes to my boss Victor Haruna ADAMU for nominating me for this summit and his continued mentorship.
