Have you ever wondered how a river’s journey affects hydroelectric power? A river has a job to complete to answer its call, as represented in Sidney Lanier’s “Song of the Chattahoochee.” The Chattahoochee River has a significant impact on the hydroelectric power Southeastern markets. The river has many uses, with power generation being one of its largest. The United States Corps of Engineers Mobile District generates electric power from four hydroelectric projects through which the Chattahoochee River flows. The four hydroelectric projects associated with Southeastern are Buford Dam, West Point Dam, Walter F. George Lock and Dam, and Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam. In Fiscal Year 2023, these four federal hydroelectric projects generated over 1 Billion kWHs of energy. #SEPAhydro is thankful the Chattahoochee River answers its call when it comes to helping provide the Southeast with hydroelectric power.

Ever wonder how hydropower is generated? Since this month is the 40th anniversary of KRCD’s hydroelectric power plant, we thought we’d use this opportunity to teach you how the Jeff L. Taylor Power Plant produces clean energy! 💡💧 Coming from the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Kings River fills Pine Flat Reservoir and flows into the hydroelectric turbines through large diameter pipes (technically called Penstocks; in our case each unit has a 13.5 feet diameter penstock) into our power plant. That flowing water puts pressure on the turbines causing them to rotate as it passes through. As a result, a generator connected to the rotating turbine produces electricity! To operate the hydroelectric power plant and produce electricity, KRCD holds a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license. Obtained in 1979, this FERC license expires in 2029, but KRCD staff are already preparing to renew the license today to continue operating the power plant without interruption for decades to come! #Hydropower #KingsRiver #PineFlat

The operating domains depend on whether generation or pumping is considered and the related hydraulic efficiency is displayed. The power plant has 2 pump-turbine reversible units (281 MW pump, 294 MW turbine). #hydropower #pumped #storage

Great summary of the potential benefits of stay van extensions by Félix-Antoine Payette ! Stay vane extensions are a very under-appreciated way to improve turbine efficiency and reduce cavitation. I have personally seen efficiency gains of up to 0.5% from stay vane and extensions. The option for composite extensions, which Alstom (now GEV) installed on some large Francis machines over a decade ago, can reduce installation costs and improve the cost/benefit.
Many hydroelectric power plants in North America are reaching a stage where they need to be upgraded. The stay vanes, embedded in concrete, require special attention and onsite modifications, adding complexity to the process. In his blog article, Félix-Antoine Payette, Senior Engineer, Industrial and Hydro at BBA, analyzes the factors to consider when assessing whether to modify stay vanes. The steady march towards the shut down of our gas grid continues. I still firmly believe the raw economics and engineering behind using hydrogen for residential heating will (eventually) render the vested arguments from Industry redundant. But we must remember this is a massive change that will effect many thousands of hard working people, and these networks still have to be paid for. Just today: - Redcar trial cancelled (zero suprise) - ofgem calling for clarity on shutting gas grids down - future home standard consultation rules out ‘hydrogen ready’ https://lnkd.in/dSjsYpEQ #hydrogen #heating Cadent Gas Limited Northern Gas Networks Ofgem

Check out our article on thinking big by looking small: how kW River Hydroelectric aims to capture the power potential of low-head dams from our January issue. kWRiver Hydroelectric has patented a turbine design that can generate power from a low- head dam without requiring modifications to the dam itself. The turbine produces three-phase alternating current (AC) power at grid voltages that can be sent to the grid without needing to be converted from direct current (DC). In this interview, CEO Paul Kling talks about kW River’s turbine, which can operate with as little as 5–7 feet of head, and the huge potential market for the device. https://bit.ly/41RPNdm #kWRiverHydroelectric #RenewableEnergy #LowHeadDams #HydropowerInnovation #TurbineDesign #CleanEnergyTech #SustainablePower #HydroelectricInnovation
