Melbourne maybe fortunate with extenuating circumstances as these events can be years in the making. "The International Congress and Convention Association in May ranked Sydney as Australia’s top destination for business meetings (sixth in Asia-Pacific and 25th globally), ahead of Melbourne (ninth in the region and 35th globally) and Brisbane (14th in the region and 76th globally). Sydney also ranked ahead of Melbourne and Brisbane in the 2019 rankings. Paris has maintained its top ranking worldwide over the last five years while Singapore jumped from seventh to second, ahead of Lisbon in third." I'd be watching Singapore! Having just spoken at real estate conferences in Hong Kong, the UK, and now at EXPO REAL (Messe München), it’s been interesting to see how sentiment across the continents is very much that the commercial real estate industry is on the path to recovery, following a couple of challenging years. Some of the trends that are playing out include the growing imperative to invest in sustainable real estate, how generative AI might impact CRE, and where best to deploy capital for future growth. At each event, we found that investors are very much looking to the Australian market for opportunities. Against that backdrop, it was great to take part in a thought-provoking conversation about Investment Opportunities in Australia alongside Bhagya S, Chris Chapple, and Louise Kavanagh, moderated by Dr Tim Moonen. London has emerged as a major player in European hotel investment, driving the sector's remarkable growth in 2024. European hotel deals hit a five-year high in the first half of the year, and London was at the forefront, boasting the highest deal volume by city at €2.6bn (£2.2bn)—a staggering 215% increase from €827m (£696m) in H1 2023. According to Cushman & Wakefield, the UK, Spain, and France together accounted for two-thirds of the total European deals. Major events like Euro 2024, the Paris Olympic Games, and Taylor Swift’s Eras tour played a significant role in boosting London's hotel investment activity. 🌟 During #MIPIM2024, our panel on ‘The Impact of Major Sporting and Cultural Events’ discussed how events can drive economic growth, a sentiment echoed by Councillor Nick Kemp, Leader, Newcastle City Council, who highlighted the need to embed sport and culture into a city's core economic strategies: "We often see sport and culture as an add-on.
