The IEMA recently released new guidance on effectively implementing the mitigation hierarchy in project design, from concept through to construction. This guidance stresses the importance of integrating environmental and social considerations early, securing robust planning conditions, and ensuring their effective transfer to construction teams. Notably, it highlights the critical role of the Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCow) in monitoring and enforcing these measures, helping to prevent delays and maintain environmental standards throughout project execution. 👉 You can learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eTzzvwap If you would like to learn more about the roles and responsibilities of the EnvCoW: Naturally Compliant wrote a detailed article on the subject which you can read via the link below, and the University of West Scotland is running its EnvCow Foundation Course later this year. 👉 Article: The changing role of the Environmental Clerk of Works (https://lnkd.in/eKbJ2pzh). #EnvCoW #EnvironmentalManagement

It’s good to see steps being made to better define the role of an Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW). When implemented correctly, the EnvCoW independently monitor and report on environmental compliance. They do not design or implement mitigation, or ‘ensure’ compliance on a project.

“If someone comes to RPS, sees an idea, and says ‘hey, look, I can make that better’, it’s great and it makes everyone’s life easier, essentially”. – Keith, Senior Project Manager. At RPS, the Clean Water Team utilises and refines smart design to make the best engineering validation and allow our clients to make the best decisions for their projects. But more importantly, all their work contributes towards something even greater - to support the conservation of our most vital resource, Water. At RPS, every idea matters. Whether you’ve been with us for a year or a decade, you’re a vital part of a team that’s making a real difference. Whether it’s scientific monitoring to safeguard waterways against pollutants, or innovations for supplementing potable supply in water-scarce cities, the team combines science, technology, and hands-on experience to optimise water system performance, solving problems that matter and making a positive impact on their communities. Here at RPS, they are proud to have the opportunity to create real change. In this video, the team share their journey at RPS, the culture they’re surrounded by, and what someone new to the team can expect. https://lnkd.in/efCf9hvF Whether you're a graduate looking for a start to your career or a talented engineer or modeller looking for the next challenge, we want to hear from you! Spring break! Kind of 😅 Today marks the last day of the first course for my post-grad study in environmental management. I submitted by last paper this week, and count some 9,000 words written by yours truly, across the last 10 weeks! Now I have 4 weeks 'break' until my summer course begins. I celebrated this small milestone by attending a webinar (I know!) on constructed wetlands in the Bay of Plenty - a subject I've been chasing down expert opinion on for the last few months. As far as I can tell, BOP offers a head start on an excellent collaborative model for putting larger environmental projects in place - bringing together landowners, NIWA scientists, Toi Moana Bay of Plenty Regional Council, local iwi and the community. I like that we're seeing: > Strategic land retirement/land use change > Collaborative approaches > Targeted solutions for highly degraded catchments and receiving environments > Near real time monitoring tools being deployed judiciously > Decent chunks of funding to enable larger works > An open and transparent conversation about the real state of the catchment > The willingness to share what was learned and be clear about the trade offs The early results are certainly promising. Monitoring show the systems are working - significant drops in total nitrogen and total phosphorous, decent changes in sediment. I want to see more of these nature based solutions deployed at pace. Most of the success stories I've heard require a leg up from a motivated regional council. Let's follow BOP's lead and take action.

CEO, Bio Logical LLC | Environmental Planning and Permitting Expert | Rescuer of Field Projects | Micro Enterprise of The Year 2020 | Board Game Master | We’ll help you with your NEPA Environmental Impact Statement!
As biological consultants, we often focus on wildlife and habitat concerns. However, we understand that project managers juggle many responsibilities, including: ✔ Environmental Compliance ✔ Worker safety ✔ Project timelines and budgets ✔ Equipment and material logistics ✔ Regulatory requirements from various agencies When you understand that each of these areas also requires its own unique permitting processes, it's clear why many project managers feel overwhelmed. The permitting process can be overwhelming and a significant source of stress and potential delays. We've seen projects hit unexpected roadblocks due to overlooked permits or last-minute discoveries that require additional authorizations. For instance, a seemingly straightforward project can suddenly require a Section 10 incidental take permit if a protected species is found on site, potentially adding months to your timeline. Each permit comes with its own set of requirements, timelines, and potential pitfalls: Environmental Assessments (EAs) or Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) may be required, often involving lengthy public comment periods. Permits might need to be obtained from multiple agencies—federal, state, and local—each with its own procedures and timelines. The specific surveys required can vary widely depending on the project location and potential species present, affecting scheduling and budgeting. Knowing all of this, here’s our advice: ✔ Engage in early consultation to identify all potential permitting needs, helping to avoid surprises down the line. ✔ Align biological surveys and assessments with the project timeline, considering optimal survey windows and agency processing times. ✔ Leverage established relationships with regulatory agencies to help streamline the permitting process. ✔ Translate complex regulatory requirements into clear, actionable steps for the team. Time is money in construction and development, butwith the right expertise the permitting process can go from a potential obstacle to a well-managed part of your project plan. #PermittingProcess #EnvironmentalCompliance #ConstructionChallenges #BiologicalConsulting
