The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced last week they would adopt the updated Minimum Energy Standards for new single- and multifamily homes. According to HUD and USDA, adopting these standards decreases residential energy costs, reduces energy consumption, and improves home resilience. Starting May 28, 2024, all new homes financed by FHA and USDA must adhere to the 2021 IECC for single-family homes, while multifamily housing must meet the 2021 IECC or ASHRAE 90.1-2019 standards. Single-family homes must comply within 18 months while multifamily homes have 12 months. For builders, this may pose challenges, especially in regions with less stringent local codes.   APA is developing wall assemblies that provide code-compliant alternatives to the 2021 IECC prescriptive path, which requires continuous insulation. A recent study conducted in 2022 reveals Florida is lagging behind in the landscape of energy-efficient construction across the United States. 🏡 Over 2.4 million homes and apartments in the U.S. are now certified with the Energy Star label. 🌱 In 2022, more than 120,000 homes (9% of total new units) received the Energy Star certification, marking a significant increase from 2021 (7%). 🌍 Arizona leads the nation in energy-efficient construction, with a remarkable 42% of newly built homes earning the Energy Star certification. 🔍 Among metros, Kalamazoo-Portage, MI, stands out with an impressive 39% of all new housing units built being green homes. 🌐 Florida metros, including Cape Coral-Fort Myers, are on the radar for lower percentages of energy-efficient new homes, but the nationwide movement is gradually reshaping construction priorities.
