Next month is the STÄUBLI Open Day, specifically for the plastics industry. If you are attending the event on the 17th October, then I’ll be there presenting ‘From challenges to action: Straightforward strategies for sustainability’. Dow and Procter & Gamble have joined forces to pioneer a new recycling technology aimed at transforming hard-to-recycle plastic packaging into high-quality, near-virgin recycled polyethylene. This innovative approach combines advanced dissolution processes to tackle a variety of plastic materials, focusing on reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with polyethylene production. 🌍 🔍 The joint development agreement will utilize both companies' extensive expertise in materials science and supply chain management to develop this technology, expected to reach commercial scale upon successful completion. 💡 Did you know that AI can design enzymes that eat plastic waste? ‘Biological recycling’ uses enzymes to break down plastic waste without creating microplastics or degrading the material in the process. Recently Forbes spoke to our Senior Investment Analyst, Richard Wielechowski, about the viability of scaling up this technology: “There would be no reason the technology can’t work and can’t scale. We use enzymatic technology in all kinds of other industrial processes […] The real caveat for me is always cost”, he explained. With only 9% of plastic currently recycled, there’s a long way to go before these novel technologies significantly impact the ongoing ‘Plastics vs Planet’ battle, which gained momentum in the recent negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty. In light of these growing regulatory risks, Forbes asks whether “investors truly have a view of how such risks impact their investments?”, citing our ‘Plastic Risk’ report which found the risk premia for plastics companies decreased between 2021 and 2023.
