October is American National Pharmacists Month, a month dedicated to highlighting the crucial role pharmacists play in our health and well-being. This month is especially significant for Kyle Hui, PharmD BCGP, LifeLong’s Pharmacy Director, and only pharmacist. Pharmacists like Hui are essential to healthcare organizations and play a critical role in ensuring optimal patient care, medication safety, and improved health outcomes. Pharmacists work alongside other healthcare professionals to provide patient-centered, team-based care, which includes counseling patients on medication use, managing medication therapy, and addressing medication-related problems. Their expertise helps expand access to care, improve medication adherence, and reduce healthcare costs. The patient-centered care is what attracted Hui to LifeLong. “I felt like I wanted to use the knowledge that I have to help the providers here and the patients to get what they need,” he said. As LifeLong’s only pharmacist, Hui’s responsibilities are extensive and vital. He not only orders medications for the dispensaries but also oversees the vaccine program and acts as the liaison between LifeLong and local pharmacies. Additionally, Hui and his staff ensure LifeLong’s compliance with the intricate federal 340B program, which mandates drug manufacturers provide discounts to low-income and uninsured patients. #AmericanPharmacistsMonth #ThankAPharmacist #PharmacyMonth #PharmacyHeroes
