People always ask where the name HNDRX came from. Born from listening to Jimi Hendrix and sipping Hendricks Gin , our name emerged in a stroke of utter genius. We simply removed the vowels, and here we are—HNDRX. *Just to be clear – we've refined our process since then. But there's more to it. Hendrix wasn't just a musician; he was a revolutionary. He redefined what music could be, pushing boundaries and breaking conventions. At HNDRX, we channel that same spirit. One of the standout moments this year was the inaugural edition of #musictech at Slush, the official music vertical of the Slush Conference 20 Nov 2024 in Helsinki. It was an absolute pleasure to host and curate this groundbreaking event alongside Atte Hujanen and Jani Jalonen —huge thanks to both of you! The quality of speakers and discussions was truly world-class, making the event an unforgettable success. With 700 attendees from across the globe and a top-tier speaker lineup, #musictech showcased Helsinki's potential as an international hub for connecting music professionals. It proved that this city can be a vital platform for fostering collaboration and innovation in the music industry. Some might argue that Europe already has its fair share of conferences, and competition is fierce. But the dark November nights of Helsinki offer a unique advantage. When the world's leading VCs and investors descend on the city for Slush—one of the premier startup and investor events—everyone wants to be here, including the music industry. This synergy is what made our event so special. Thanks to Slush, the number of investors participating in #musictech was unparalleled, far surpassing what you might see at any other music or music-tech event worldwide. This remains a key strength for an event like ours. While music tech may still be considered a niche (it shouldn’t be), it undeniably attracts attention. Synchestra: a dream, an adventure, a lesson in perseverance How do you start a dream? Thinking, testing, more dreaming, topping up, failing, trying again. Still dreaming. With stubbornness and idealism. How do you keep that dream alive? Through realism and support from others. These are perhaps the most important lessons of my journey with Synchestra. Setbacks are inevitable. I knew that, but it was sometimes really hard. Like the time when our first developer, after a year and a half of creation, left the company, and it went black before my eyes. But I also discovered how encouragement gives you wings again: professional musicians and conservatory professors who said ‘This is the right path,’ and the 30 professionals worldwide who invest their time and talent in the same belief. VLAIO - Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Start it Accelerate | @KBC and Sirris | Innovation forward gave us structural backing. But it is my associates and staff who are at the core: critical where necessary, loyal where important, and tireless in their commitment. And then there is my wife, the invisible but indispensable link. Without that foundation, everything collapses. What lingers? That making dreams come true never happens alone. A few weeks ago, I had an epiphany. The beginnings of an idea had been rattling around my brain for months, but I kept telling myself it was too big, too bold, too ambitious. Then I went to the ABBA museum in Stockholm. 🌟 Anyone who knows me knows my lifelong devotion to ABBA — I’m NOT saying it’s the reason I moved to Stockholm… but I’m not saying it’s completely not either 😂 Anyway, the museum is amazing but afterwards, as I sat on the grass on Djurgården enjoying an ice cream, I felt fizzy — like physically. Like I was turning into a werewolf. In a good way. Less teeth. 🌟 It hit me that one of the things I’ve always loved about ABBA is that if something they wanted didn’t exist, they created it. The museum reminded me how their creativity and innovation extended far beyond their music. They didn’t accept the limitations that the music industry offered them — they did what they wanted, even if they had to invent to do so. 🌟 I’ve always had something of a similar approach to life and work, whether starting book clubs I wanted to join or bringing invisible theatre to Vancouver clubs 20 years ago (and getting deported from Canada in doing so, though that’s another story!). It’s one of the many reasons I love indie publishing so much — nobody tells me that I can’t try something just because it’s never been done before. But I realised I DID let the limitations of the film & TV industry stop me. 🌟 I’d innovate to a point, then when faced with 20 blank walls of producers not willing to take a risk on something different, I’d retreat— ultimately, out of the industry altogether. 🌟 But after a bit of inspiration from my idols, it’s time to shake things up. By the time I got back to Slussen, my big, bold, ambitious idea had taken form. 🌟 Watch this space 😎 . #filmindustry #womeninfilmandtv #abba #techstartup
