Three decades ago, world leaders made a groundbreaking declaration, recognizing sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights as human rights. The Political Declaration adopted at the 57th session of the Commission on Population and Development is a step fowards. The inclusion of 'human rights for all', 'gender equality', and 'the empowerment of all women and girls' in the Political Declaration is a poignant reminder of what demands immediate attention. We urge Member States to act now, emphasizing accountability and impact for women, adolescents, and girls in all their diversity.

🌍 Exciting News in Reproductive Health! 🌟 🚺 Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3.7.1 is crucial for ensuring women's reproductive rights are upheld. This goal focuses on providing women of reproductive age with access to modern family planning methods. 💊 Effective contraception empowers individuals to responsibly control the timing and quantity of children they desire, breaking barriers and promoting gender equality. 🕰 For time immemorial, this heavy responsibility has fallen on the shoulders of women and girls around the world, often within health and gender-inequitable local contexts. 💡 That's why I find this article intriguing! Balbach et al. (2023) are pioneering on-demand contraception pills for men, offering reversible infertility. While it is still a work in progress, this innovation promises to reshape gender dynamics and advance reproductive health equity worldwide 🤞 ✨ It is high time men shared ownership! 🙏 Special thanks to #JohnsHopkinsBloombergSchoolofPublicHealth's Global Health Now for highlighting this news. (Tip: This free newsletter is an excellent resource for anyone interested in staying updated on public/global health news.) #SDG #ReproductiveHealth #GenderEquality

2 years after the Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade, we are marching, striking, & using our voices to demand equality, reproductive rights, and an end to gender-based violence. The data and findings since the Dobbs decision provides important evidence and reinforcement of what we already know; people will continue to seek abortion care despite the policy barriers that anti-abortion politicians impose. Behaviors intended to control women’s bodies, their autonomy, & their contact with others are strongly correlated with an increased risk of intimate partner violence. The United Nations defines violence against women as "any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.” · Globally, ~736 million women [almost 1 / 3] have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both at least once in their life. · The COVID pandemic has intensified violence against women and girls & has also exposed and exacerbated deep structural inequalities, reversed decades of progress on women’s participation in the labor market, increased the number of women living in extreme poverty, & increased the burden of unpaid care & domestic work. They're lucky we're (still) asking for equality and not (yet) demanding revenge. In the words of Otep - "Stand up! Speak Out! Strike Back!” [post contains solely expressed opinions and views, not those of any others or affiliates]

We are delighted that during our Women Deliver #WD2023 reception last week, Arielle Kayabaga on behalf of Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada announced a $10 million CAD allocation to MSI, for our ‘Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights’ project. The project, which is a part of Canada’s SheSoars initiative, will provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services for women, adolescents, those living in extreme poverty, people living with disabilities, and conflict-and-displacement-affected populations across Africa and Asia. As MSI’s Senior Director of Global Programmes and Philanthropy Anna Mackay shared, “We are heartened by the continuing support from the Canadian government which furthers our already strong partnership. With these funds, many more women and girls around the world will be reached with life-changing reproductive healthcare and information — countering an emboldened anti-choice opposition who are trying to deny people their reproductive rights.” Read more about our partnership, and this investment: https://lnkd.in/eFj7Em5r

THE LINK BETWEEN THE INTERNATION WOMEN'S DAY THEME "INVEST IN WOMEN: ACCELERATE PROGRESS" AND REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS Today women celebrated the international women's day under the Theme : Invest in Women: Accelerate growth. This Theme underscores the importance of empowering women to advance social and economic progress. Reproductive rights are an essential component of women's empowerment as they encompass the freedom to make choices regarding one's own Reproductive health and wellness. When women are empowered they are able to make better decision about their sexual health which may include access to birth control, care for mothers and other information about all aspects of sexual Reproductive health. By priotising women empowerment, society can tackle barriers that restrict women's ability to exercise their Reproductive Rights and have control over decision making. Women who are empowered are likely to support and defend their reproductive rights, speak out against unfair practices and help make society more fair and welcoming for everyone. This year's IWD theme highlights the significance connection between reproductive rights and investing in women such as promoting gender equality and gauranteeing access to comprehensive reproductive rights. Society can move faster towards a more fair and inclusive world where women have freedom to make choices about their bodies and Reproductive futures if it recognizes the link between women empowerment and Reproductive rights. #iwd2024womenleadingtheway #Reproductiverights#

*One in three women experience physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime. This is more than a statistic – this is about real people and women’s lives impacted by violence every day. Young women and girls in rural areas and unstable regions are at greater risk of violence. Indigenous women and girls, people who do not conform to gender norms and people with disabilities are more likely to experience violence too. Join us during 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, an annual campaign that begins on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and runs until Human Rights Day (December 10th). How can you get involved? Show how much you care about ending violence against women and girls by sharing the actions you’re taking. Here are some ideas: 1) Educate yourself. 2) Listen to the experiences of others. 3) Share your learnings and speak out to end violence. 4) Engage with organizations who are tackling gender-based violence. This year's campaign also calls on governments worldwide to share how they are investing in gender-based violence prevention. ➡️ Visit care.ca/shesoars to learn how we’re addressing gender-based violence through the SHE SOARS* project and how Canadian organizations are engaging men and boys to do the same! It's International Women's Day today! 🎉 and the theme for this year is.....🥁🥁🥁 "Invest in women: Accelerate progress". 🌟 On this day, let's also remember the ongoing struggles for women's reproductive rights. As a woman's age and life circumstances change, her reproductive needs and rights are dynamic, and evolve too. For a woman in her 20s or 30s who doesn't use any form of contraception, the right to have a legal, safe, and affordable abortion may become the most relevant reproductive issue. For couples and individuals facing infertility, access to assisted reproductive technologies (ART) might be a critical issue as these services are not always covered by insurance. Similarly, as she approaches menopause, doctors may recommend a hysterectomy for any reason, and that may become the most relevant reproductive rights issue for her. ✅️ Access to reproductive healthcare is a fundamental right. ✅️ Many women still face barriers and restrictions. ✅️ It's crucial that we continue to advocate for these rights. 💪 As we celebrate how far we've come, let's also commit to pushing further. By investing in women and supporting their reproductive rights. We can accelerate progress towards gender equality. Together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable world for all.
